Situated beside Arbroath harbour on the A92. Car and coach parking available nearby.

Beside Arbroath’s harbour, on the sea front, stands an elegant complex of regency buildings. Now the Burgh’s museum, the buildings were built in 1813. Until 1955 these buildings formed the shore station and family living quarters for the light keepers on the Bell Rock Lighthouse which lies 11.5 miles out from Arbroath on a dangerous semi-sunken reef.

Both lighthouse and shore station were built by Robert Stevenson, founder of the famous dynasty of lighthouse engineers

At the Signal Tower you can find out about the fascinating history of the Bell Rock Lighthouse and visit the outhouse to see the massive lens of the last manually operated lamp. In addition, the museum displays reflect the past lives of the keepers’ families and other displays tell the story of Arbroath’s fishing heritage.

Arbroath Signal Tower Museum collects artefacts, photographs and archive material relating to the history of Arbroath and District.

The collections are especially representative of the Burgh’s fishing heritage, along with the building’s link with the historic Bell Rock Lighthouse designed by the famous engineer Robert Stevenson (1772 -1850).

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Glenesk Folk Museum at the Retreat was set up in 1955 by Miss Greta Michie, a local farmer's daughter and school teacher, It was based on Scandinavian folk museums she had visited in Norway.

When the museum was set up, with the generous help of Lord and Lady Dalhousie, the Retreat building had been empty for some time, after being used as a summer holiday house for friends of the Laird. Built in the 1840’s by Captain, later Rear-Admiral, JE Wemyss as a “retreat” from his life at sea it was originally quite a small cottage. After his death in 1854 it was first rented out and then later enlarged sometime near the end of the 1800’s and used as a shooting lodge. It was enlarged again round about the 1920’s when the distinctive frontage was built. Millden Lodge later superseded it as a lodge.

As well as being a repository for Glen history, the idea behind the setting up of The Retreat was to give employment to the women and young folk of the Glen, a task it has performed admirably for over fifty years. It also gave an outlet for local produce, such as eggs, butter, home baking, home made jams and heather honey as well as local craftwork.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
This beautiful Georgian house, overlooking Montrose Basin, was built in 1730 by William Adam. The house features superb plasterwork, a particular and memorable feature. Outside, enjoy the attractive walled garden and woodland walks.

Within the grounds the courtyard has undergone in 2011 extensive repairs and redecoration to restore it to its former glory. The grounds, with the help of our international team of volunteers, are looking at their best despite one of the worst winters on record. The biggest change has to be the introduction of the Hutchison collection of Scottish colourists and the Stirling collection of furniture, ranging from the 18th century to the 1960s. Quite simply breathtaking!

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum is situated in Kirriemuir Town House, a building that has been at the heart of Kirriemuir since its construction in 1604. The Museum opened in 2001 after the building was carefully restored and conserved.

The building houses displays on two floors along with a reception area/shop. Toilets, including one accessible to wheelchair users are available within the museum.

Overview of our collections
Here at Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum, local people and visitors to the town can discover the unique atmosphere of historic Kirriemuir and the splendour of the Angus Glens. Stepping through the door, visitors experience a vivid introduction to the history, culture and natural environment of ‘Kirrie’ and the western Angus glens, with recordings of local people, computer interactives and permanent displays. Illustrated talks and children’s events complement and develop the variety of temporary displays that take place throughout the year.

On the ground floor we look at the town’s history, including the origins of Kirriemuir’s name and famous Kirriemarians such as J. M. Barrie and rock star Bon Scott. A detailed model transports visitors to the town in 1604, the year the Town House was built. Upstairs the wildlife, geology, history and archaeology of Glen Prosen, Glen Isla, Glen Clova and Glen Doll are explored. A diorama brings visitors face to face with some of the wildlife of the Glens - an eagle glares imperiously from a crag whilst two hares in winter fur leap onto their hind legs to box each other.
