The museum railway exploits the railwayline between Veendam en Musselkanaal with historical steamtrains. The connection was in use until the eighties. With its length of 26 km it is the longest museumrailway in the Netherlands. It is a relict of the railwaysystem that was built in the beginning of this century by the NOLS (NoordOoster Locaal Spoorweg) and the former STAR (Groningsch-Drentsche Spoorwegmaatschappij 'Stadskanaal-Ter Apel-Rijksgrens). The purpose of the new S.T.A.R. (Stichting Stadskanaal Rail = Stadskanaal Rail Foundation) founded in 1992, is to preserve the railway as an industrial monument of the peat moor country. It now has over 8 locomotives of which three are steamlocomotives and dozens of passengercoaches and goods vans.

The museum was founded in 1939 and has been housed in the former Veendam High School since the beginning of the nineties.
The museum tells the story of the Groningen peat district, which was once a part of the immense Bourtanger Moor and stretched as far as the Province of Drenthe and the adjoining German Emsland. The development of the region from the Mesolithic period (10,000-7,600 BC) till the early 20th century is shown. |

The museum shows the history of shipbuilding and shipping of the northern parts of the Netherlands from the Middle Ages until the present day. In two medieval buildings dating from the fifteenth century a wide variety of subjects is covered. In addition, every year a variety of temporary exhibitions are held on different aspects of maritime history.

The Groninger Museum occupies a historical location in the water of the inner city canals, adjoining the stately 19th-century avenues with urban manors that were constructed on the site of the former city fortifications.
The museum is not merely a casing for art, it is a work of art in itself, a principle that is occurring to an increasing extent in contemporary architecture. It is an artwork in the centre of the city, traversed by public space where passers-by are directly confronted by all kinds of works of art. Four pavilions, grouped around a golden-yellow tower, accommodate exhibitions of the Museum’s own collection: world-renowned Chinese and Japanese porcelain, work by the Groningen artists’ association De Ploeg, fashion, photography, design, and painting.
