With more than 700 comic strip authors, Belgium has more comic strip artists per square kilometre than any other country in the world! It is here that the comic strip has grown from a popular medium into an art in its own right. Nowhere else comics are so strongly rooted in reality and in people's imagination.
If you come to visit the Belgian Comic Strip Center, you will witness the unusual marriage of the Ninth Art and Art Nouveau, two artistic forms of expression which have always been particularly cherished in Brussels. This kingdom of imagination is home to some of Belgium's best-known comic strip heroes: Tintin, Spirou, Bob and Bobette, the Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Blake and Mortimer, Marsupilami, etc. They are one big happy family of paper heroes. We can safely say that the heart of European comic strips beats in Brussels. |

Ce dernier bâtiment avait été conçu comme remise et garage pour la clientèle du restaurant, que devait être le Pavillon chinois, dans les plans de Léopold II. Mais ce projet ne s'étant pas réalisé, l'annexe du Pavillon chinois resta sans affectation et, par conséquent, fermée au public depuis son achèvement en 1907.
Or, cette dépendance s'est avérée idéale pour exposer les riches collections d'art japonais que détiennent les Musées royaux d'Art et d'Histoire, mais qu'ils ont dû placer en réserve depuis 1988. Aussi, dès 1990, les Musées ont-ils projeté de les réhabiliter. En effet, le caractère purement fonctionnel du bâtiment confère à l'intérieur une sobriété en harmonie avec l'art japonais classique; en outre, ses volumes diversifiés et sa distribution équilibrée se prêtent très bien à une présentation d'objets de formats très variés. Ainsi, la grande salle centrale, prévue pour garer des voitures hippomobiles et automobiles, convient-elle parfaitement à la mise en valeur des armures et de l'équipement militaire. Les petites selleries s'adaptent tout à fait au raffinement précieux de petits objets à voir de très près, tels que boîtes en laque, sculptures miniatures et garnitures de sabres; d'autre part, les écuries offrent le recul nécessaire pour admirer à loisir paravents et peintures, costumes et meubles. Quant aux tribunes, leur répartition permet d'y encastrer les oeuvres bouddhiques et d'y aménager des aires de repos. Enfin, les fenils dispensent une atmosphère lumineuse, propre à faire jouer les harmonies colorées des estampes et le chatoiement de la céramique. A noter que les quelque 12.000 pièces que compte la collection japonaise ne seront jamais exposées toutes à la fois. Leur bonne conservation exige en effet une rotation régulière. Que le public n'en soit pas déçu. Au contraire, plutôt que de le lasser par la vision constante des mêmes oeuvres, cette politique offre l'avantage de réveiller périodiquement son intérêt, grâce à une découverte progressive de cet important patrimoine. |

This museum, which has preserved its atmosphere of old, is devoted to Antoine-Joseph Wiertz (1806-1865), a somewhat controversial artistic figure of the Belgian Romantic movement.
Wiertz liked to be spectacular, painting huge canvasses where he gave vent to his need for inordinate proportions (The Greeks and the Troyens claiming the Body of Patrocles) but also dramatic subjects, scenes of terror which represent an implacable humanitarian plea (The Premature Burial). Wiertz is also the author of numerous small studies rapidly painted and paintings which are memorable for their refinement. His portraits, above all his self-portraits, are eye-catching. In addition to the vitality and power of his sculptures and the great sensitivity of his drawings, Wiertz was also an extremely productive writer. The construction of this studio-museum, in the Léopold district in Brussels, is the result of agreements concluded in1850 between Wiertz and the Belgian government. In the year following the artist's death, his legacy, including all the works in his studio, were transferred to the Belgian State. In 1868, the Wiertz Museum became part of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. |

At the very end of the 19th century, Constantin Meunier (1831-1905), whose talent was finally recognised internationally, had a house-studio built where he could live and work, in the rue de l'Abbaye, in Ixelles (Brussels). He lived there for the last five years of life. The house - with its important collection of more than 700 works - was acquired by the State in 1936 and opened to the public in 1939. This museum, which is now part of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Brussels, has been renovated and, since 1986, visitors have been able to discover a choice of approximately 150 works and documents. It focuses in particular on the life of the master between 1875 and 1905, that second life in his own words, where he turned his talent to the social and industrial realities of Belgium, first of all through a series of paintings and drawings, then from 1885, through a return to sculpture, which consecrated his reputation as one of the greatest creative artists of the genre.
In addition to paintings such as Removal of a Broken Crucible, there are sculptures as important as The Hammerman, a world of plaster and bronze which made a deep impression on his era and continued to influence the realist movement during the first decades of the 20th century. |
