The Retretti Art Centre is one of the largest art centres in the Nordic region. Located in the heart of Finnish lakeland and in close proximity to the magnificent Punkaharju Ridge, Retretti is unique in that it has galleries both above and below ground. The subterranean galleries and concert hall , excavated during the 1980s to a depth of 30 metres, cover an area of 3 700 square metres.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806-81), a Finnish philosopher and promoter of cultured society, lived in Kuopio from 1843 to 1849. The house, which consists of seven rooms, has been decorated with objects that belonged to Snellman´s family. The museum depicts the family life and work of J.V. Snellman during his Kuopio years. The building is a typical middle 19th century house.

The field of study of the Orthodox Church Museum is one of a kind in Finland and in the whole of Scandinavia. It derives from the Collection of Ancient Objects founded at the Monastery of Valamo in 1911. The museum houses one of the most beautiful icon collections in the western world, precious gold and silver objects, and lavishly embroidered church textiles.
Most of the exhibits are from the ancient monasteries evacuated during the Second World War (Valamo, Petsamo, Konevitsa) as well as from some larger parishes of Karelia: a region in southeast Finland that was partially ceded to the Soviet Union in connection with the Second World War. The hospital museum presents the history of the Siilinjärvi District Mental Hospital, later called Harjamäki Hospital, which was founded in 1926 and closed down in 1997, and the development of the treatment of mental illnesses as well as the psychiatric nursing in Finland. The exhibitions also features portrayals of the life of patients and nursing staff at the hospital.
