The "Mátyás Varga" exhibition facility of theatre history was inaugurated at 11/a Bécsi körút in Szeged on 1st August 1987. Mátyás Varga, a stage designer, bought the building, which needed refurbishing. Ybl-prize winner István Tarnai, an architect, made the plans for the refurbishing. After a permanent exhibition was arranged in the exhibition facility, Mátyás Varga donated the facility to the community of Szeged. The exhibition facility is owned by the local community, and is operated by the Ferenc Móra Museum.
Spectators arriving at the Szeged Open-Air Festival can see a comprehensive, impressive picture of the history of the open-air festival and the work of Mátyás Varga as a stage designer at the exhibition.
In area the facility is nearly 300 m2?, the exhibition is arranged on three floors. The exhibition presents Mátyás Varga's work as a stage designer, a career that expanded over six decades. The exhibition illustrates a significant segment of theatre history in Hungary to the visitors.
From the intimate internal yard you can enter the ground floor of the exhibition facility through an open corridor. Posters from the 1930s decorate the walls of the corridor. In the first exhibition hall that has a very emotional atmosphere, you can see Mátyás Varga's stage designs in chronological order. On the first floor the piece of mural ceramics entitled "Országépíto" (Developer of a Nation) commemorates the memory of Károly Kós, an architect, writer and literary historian from Transylvania. You can also see various elements of stage furniture and pieces of ceramics as well as stage designs in the hall. On the second floor in the attic area you can see graphic pictures by Mátyás Varga. The pictures are of great historical value today.

The museum was founded by the municipality of Hódmezovásárhely in 1905. The first pieces for the ethnographical collection were collected for the 1904 industrial agricultural exhibition. Lajos Kiss collected the first pieces for the ethnographical collection under the supervision of János Tornyai, a local artist. A department of archaeology was established in the museum in 1930. The most important pieces in the fine art collection are the almost one thousand works by János Tornyai. The museum was named after the artist in 1951.
You can see a permanent exhibition entitled "Az újkokor és rézkor muvészete" (Art in the Neolithic Period and in the Copper Age). You can see several world-famous archaeological finds exhibited at the exhibition. At the folklore exhibition you can see various artefacts that represent local folk ceramics, furniture painting and embroidery. Part of the permanent exhibitions is the memorial room dedicated to Lajos Kiss, a local ethnographer, founder and first director of the museum.
The "Alföldi Galéria" (Alföldi Gallery) functions in a separate building. In the gallery there is a permanent exhibition of pictures painted by earlier as well as contemporary masters.
The "Kopáncsi Tanyamúzeum" (Kopáncs Farm Museum), which is situated along the main road number 47, also belongs to the museum. There is a permanent exhibition of various artefacts that illustrate rural life at the beginning of the 20th century in the exhibition hall.
The "Csúcsi Fazekasház" (Csúcs Potter's House, 101 Rákóczi str., Hódmezovásárhely), a house formerly owned by Sándor Vékony, a local potter, preserves the memory of local potters with a potter's workshop and a furnished living-room and kitchen.
The windmill in Erzsébet street in Hódmezovásárhely also belongs to the museum. There is no exhibition in it, but it can be visited by museum professionals.

Gyula Juhász, Ferenc Móra and Attila József Memorial Exhibiton;
Literary Documents in Makó.
The house of Dr. János Espersit (1879-1931) was an important intellectual centre in the southern part of the Hungarian Plain for two decades. János Espersit, a well-known lawyer, who began his political career in the Party of Independence. Later he joined the Republican Party; he was also a radical newspaper editor and a great supporter of literature and arts. Gyula Juhász, a famous local poet, stayed in his house when he worked as a secondary school teacher in Makó (1913-1917). He wrote the following lines about his host's house: "The muses should bless this nice house / Where I pass my happy days." Attila József, another great poet, also stayed in Espersit' s house first as a guest, later as a lodger. The poet arrived in Makó in October 1920 to study at the local secondary school. His form-master, Dr. Kálmán Eperjessy, characterised him as follows: "He is a talented, conscientious, brave young man. He has great aptitude for writing poems." Attila József published his first volume of collected poems entitled "Szépség koldusa" (Beggar of Beauty) based on the poems he wrote in Makó. The third renowned literary personality, who stayed in Espersit's house, was Ferenc Móra, who wrote his book entitled "Georgicon" in Makó. Ferenc Móra called himself an "honorary citizen of Makó". In the house you can see documents, manuscripts and photos of the three great figures in Hungarian literature. Looking at the furniture you can imagine how these famous men of letters spent their days as Espersit's guests in the house, how Espersit really recognised and appreciated their art.
