"The Samogitian Diocese Museum is a state financed public cultural institution. Its founders are the Telsiai diocese and the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture. The institution's main goals are to preserve, collect, and safeguard, restore, analyze, and propagate artistic, cultural, and historical values. With these goals in mind, the Museum initiates projects related to the protection of the cultural heritage, and seeks to include the Lithuanian public in their implementation.
This museum was established in the former Samogitian Theological Seminary, founded in 1770. When the czarist administration closed the University of Vilnius in the 19th century, the Samogitian Theological Seminary, and the Medical Faculty in Vilnius were the only institutions of higher education left in Lithuania. Many of those who took part in the uprisings of 1831 and 1863, as well as various important figures in the development of a Lithuanian cultural and national consciousness worked and studied in Varniai. "The 19th century mansion of Renavas estate reconstructed in 1990 invites visitors to view the permanent exposition of its interiors and introduces the Lithuanian court culture (interiors, furniture, paintings, etc.)
The Ensemble of Renavas estate was built in the middle of 19th century and dates back to the period of late Classicism. Initially it was planned to build a residential estate. The assumed owner, who built this mansion, was Anatas Renne. The mansion of Neo-renaissance style, built in 1880, is a ranch house with two-storey pavilions. Two terraces descend towards the river from the South of the mansion. The front square, surrounded by different imported trees, lies on the North. Facade of the mansion overlooks the landscape gardens. The mansion of Renavas was passed through the male line of inheritance. Antanas Renne did not have any children therefore he left all his fortune to Feliksas Mielžznskis (1871–1910). Laurynas Ivinskis worked as a teacher in this estate in 1869 and collected material for the dictionary of botany. The mansion of Renavas also housed the efforts to establish the silkworm farm before the World War I. " (Museums of Lithuania) |

"The museum was opened in 1981. The museum exposition includes the models of the planes ‘Garlekys’ and ‘Lituanika’ (the latter overflew the Atlantic Ocean in 1933), a number of artists’ creations, the information about the development of aviation in Lithuania (displayed in museum cases). The total number of the exhibits is over 100; the museum’s area stretches for 445 square metres. In the adjacent rooms of the same building, an ethnographical exposition is displayed. The exposition demonstrates the daily house life, customs and traditions of the people of Vieksniai area. Besides, the exposition of the Birziskos, which is about the merits of this family for Lithuania, is sojourning in the museum. After the restoration of the Birziskos’ homeland the exposition will be transferred to their home.
The founders of the museum are the ethnographer Apolonija Sriubaite and the pedagogue Algirdas Gedvilas who is presently the museum’s superintendent. " (Museums of Lithuania) |
