The palace houses a remarkable collection of European art. It covers the main schools and shows the development of European art from the Italian Renaissance to the 20th century.
The gallery holds paintings by several well-known artists, such as Salvator Rosa, Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael, and a selection of prints by Piranesi, Canaletto, Dürer, Rembrandt and Goya. The Russian school is represented by Repin, Levitan, Roerich and others. There are also many works by minor and unknown painters. All major painting styles are covered. The collection has its origins in the early years of this century, when privately owned works were shown to the public. Some were donated to the Lithuanian Art Society's permanent collection. The museum's collections were supplemented in the post-war years by paintings confiscated from private individuals and churches by the Soviet authorities. They were displayed in the cathedral which was used as an art gallery at that time. An indication of the quality of the private collections that belonged to the noble families in the last century is given. |

Johns’ Church, The Old Vestry) The exhibition displays the development of law, humanitarian, natural and hard sciences in the University of Vilnius in 1579 - 1842. Medicine in Vilnius University 1781-1832-1842 (Vilnius University Sts. Johns’ Church, St. Barbara Chapel) The exposition encompasses the period from the beginning of teaching the course of higher medicine in Vilnius University to the closure of Vilnius Medicine-Surgery Academy. Johns’ Church, St. Anne Chapel) In this exposition, the portraits of scientists that formerly worked in the University of Vilnius, books, manuscripts, maps, plans, and diplomas are displayed."
