At the foot of the rocky Orlov Krs, on the place where the court of Ivan Crnojevic once stood, ruler Danilo built the monastery of Cetinje in 1701. Some parts taken from the ruined monastery of Crnojevici were built in this new monastery. The block of monasteries became the center of spiritual, cultural and political life of Montenegro. It has been destroyed several times by the Turks and consequently restored several times. Each time they would adjust its architecture to the configuration of the ground. The last restoration was between 1925 and 1927. In the center of the complex there’s one small church dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin. In this church there is an iconostasis, work of the Greek artists, dating back from the middle of the 19th century.
In the Southern choir there’s a coffin with the relics of St Peter of Cetinje (Sv Petar Cetinjski), while near the entrance there are graves of Prince Danilo and great duke Mirko, the father of Nikola I Petrovic. To the Northern side of the church, by the rock there’s a cell of St Peter, and to the South there are two-storey shelters. In the so-called Njegos’ shelter, there is the Museum of the monastery, which is the most significant museum of Montenegro. The Cetinje Monastery, also known as the Monastery of St Peter, represents the symbol of the Montenegrin spirituality, love for freedom and enlightenment. (c)DatabaseVCMSMünchen06

Nowadays the National Museum of Montenegro has developed into a complex museum institution with five separate museum units: Historical Museum of Montenegro, Ethnographic Museum of Montenegro, Artistic Museum of Montenegro, King Nikola's Palace and Njegos's Museum, respectively Museum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos. All these museum units are situated in Cetinje and located in special premises which for themselves represent high value monuments of culture - palace residence of King Nikola, building of Government Home, Billiard House and building of former Serbian Embassy. In scope of the National Museum there is also the birth house of Petar II Petrovic Njegos in Njegusi, with exposition connected with this genius of written word.
Desire to collect and preserve the objects witnessing the past times was present in mind of the Montenegrins from ancient times. Its rudiments may be traced back from the end of 15th century, from the time of founding Cetinje as a political and spiritual centre of Montenegro, in the new buildings of which - Palace of Ivan Crnojevic and the Monastery, there were created wealthy treasuries of cultural-historical wealth and archive-book holdings. In liberation wars, especially after the major victories over the Turks a wealthy trophy material was collected: weapons, flags, decoration, which consequently created the fundament for establishment of the Museum.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The natal home of Njegos was build by Peter I Petrovic, who divided it in three parts, for his tree brothers: Sava , Stijepo and Tomo. Sava got northeast, Stijepo southwest and Tomo the middle part of the house. It was build like an integer from Montenegrin hewed rock, on the arch, so in the parterre is vault, and above it residence. The house is 27.60 meters long, 5.20 meters from the north and 2.66 from the south (because of the terrain gradient). Roof was covered with ray straw (not with cane as some writers say, because people didn't breed it here), and attic with hurdle. According to Marko Jovan Popovic, a local man with great knowledge of tradition, old house like the new one (from 1836.) was build by bricklayers “Novljani” (from Herceg Novi).
(c)DatabaseVCMSMünchen06
During long time, some repaires were made on the old house, but it's walls remained unchanged. During first repair in 1836, straws roof was changed with brick from Crmnica. Second minor repair was made in 1893, and third in 1936. when the front door on the northeast part (which belonged to Savo Markov) was enlarged, from 168 cm x 80 cm to 2.2 m x 2 m and that room was readjusted for local warehouse. Next to the door is aperature (it's used as lardure), dimensions 53 x 50 cm. Two windows, dimensions 70 x 49 cm, are unchanged.
In the part of the house belonging to Tomo Markov, where Njegos is borned,
very small changes were made with repairs. The front door with dimensions 1.68 m x 80 cm stayed the same. Next to it, on the right side, Is aperature, dimensions 60 x 53 cm which is used for keeping water dish. There is one large room, 9.40 long, 5 wide and 2.75 meters high. The floor is above the cope and it's paved in 1936, smoother than in the other parts of the house. On the northwest are two windows, dimension 70 x 48 cm. Attic is made from fir's boards (which changed old hurdle). Inside the house are three aperature, one next to the door, dimensions 70 x 48 cm, has been used for keeping water dish, and two smaller ones, 50 x 48 cm, for other things. In southwest part of the room, in the middle part of the wall, behind quondam hearth, in 1936. chimney has been built. In the left part of the wall has been built a “pepeljak” (used for making bread), instead of the old one.
In the parterre is vault which was used as pantry and sometimes for cattles. His size is a bit smaller than the upper room because of the arch. There are doors, 1.80 m x 96 cm, that leads to the yard, window, 85 x 60 cm, and loophole, 35 x 16 cm.
In the southwest part of the house, which belonged to Stijepo, the biggest changes were made with repairs. The old front doors, turned to south, were immured in 1936. and instead of it, another doors were made in the flank of the house. And larder, next to the door, was also immured than. Inner part of the Stijepo's house is totally changed and redecorated (now there are offices). Nevertheless, the basement has stayed the same: 8.65 long, 4.65 wide and 1.90 m high. There are doors, towards yard, 1.82 x 1m and window 66 x 46 cm. Next to the house is “Palac”, King Nikolas court.
In the house is museum collection with objects that belonged to Njegos and his ancestors. In the southwest part of the house that belonged to Stijepo Markov is: offices, souvenir shop and ticket service. There are exhibits: Njegos's portrait, made in bronze by Ivan Mestrovic, chart with pedigree of the Petrovic dynasty, books written by bishops and rulers from the Petrovic Njegos house. In the middle part, that belonged to Tomo Markov, Njegos's father, next to the chimney, is stone hearth with chains and brass pot., than low round table, three chairs (stolova c) and three tripods, shelf (skorcijar) for dishes and water barrel, wooden carved shrine covered with two pleds., icon of the St. George, long riffle (dzeferdar), two short riffles (ledenica) and long knife (jatagan). The rooms that belonged to Stijepo is an exibit which includes: model of Biljarda (by M. Bozovic), five diplomas; “Njegos with escort”, picture by M. Jovicevic, every Njegos's book, translations of “Mountain Wrath”, portrait of Njegos (by M. Vrbica), “Assembly” (by S. Vujovic).

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Historical Museum of Montenegro was founded in 1989; it is situated in the premises of Vladin dom (Government House). It broadly covers the social economic, political, military and cultural heritage of Montenegro. The central exhibition, as well as the organisation of the Museum, relies on six departments which present the material from various periods of historical past of Montenegro: Pre Slavonic Period; Medieval Age; period from 16th to 18th century; Creating of Montenegrin State (1796-1878); Modern Montenegrin State (1878-1918); Montenegro in Association with Yugoslav Peoples. All these periods are mutually linked physically, chronologically and artistically creating that way a logical museological entity.(c)DatabaseVCMSMünchen06
The oldest material with findings from Doclea, Budva and other significant localities of Montenegro is kept in archeological collections. In scope of the Museum especially pointed are the collections belonging to a unique collection of war trophies, whereas the survey of Montenegrin development with all its specific traits (cultural, educational, economic, social-economic and other) has been demonstrated.
