The main building of Kuusisto Manor dates back to 1738 and is one of Finland’s oldest wooden residential buildings, built as a residence for the commander of the infantryregiment in Turku. The park surrounding the main building of Kuusisto Manor was initiated in the 1790s.
The ruins of the Bishop’s Castle in Kuusisto, the historical manor milieu and beautiful nature form a unique cultural landscape. The main building of the manor displays three exhibitions which tell about the events in Bishop’s Castle, the restoration of the ruins, the history of the colonel’s residence and Kuusisto’s natural surroundings. The Östergård Farm houses artefacts connected to the cultural history of Nagu. The collection includes tools used by both men and women, and embodies the division of sexes that existed in society. In the museum area you will find a haybarn from the 18th century and a windmill from the 19th century. The old parish meeting hall built in 1885 houses peasant handicrafts collected from the municipality. The museum is located in the old main building of the Viiainen Manor. The history of the manor dates back to the 1370’s, when Anders Garp, a nobleman of German origin, acquired the land belonging to the village of Wiiala. The estate belonged to the same family until 1796, when it was acquired by the Wittfooth family. The present main building was constructed between 1779 and1784.
The museum displays several aspects of the old rural class society. The lower floor of the main building displays manorial history, whilst on the upper floor you can find rooms dedicated to other aspects of local history. These include shoemaker’s and carpentry workshops, a classroom, a maritime room, a war memorabilia room and a room dedicated to displaced Karelians. You can also study the history of fishing, wooden dishes and vessels, and bee keeping. Exhibitions on agriculture and old vehicles, a farm hand’s lodgings and a tailor’s workshop are housed in the adjacent workers’ quarters. |

The museum is located on the old postal route. The exhibition displays traditional peasant life in Kustavi, especially fishing and seafaring. There is also a room dedicated to the author Volter Kilpi (1874 -1939), who was born in Kustavi. His Archipelago Series, including the novels ''In the Hall of Alastalo'', ''The Lesser People in the Parish'' and ''On the Way to the Church'' describe the heyday of seafaring in Kustavi.
