The Swedish Villa

Opening hours:
1of may to 1 of november: daily from 12.00-19.00 h.

The Swedish Villa from 1888 was originally constructed as an example of classic Swedish wood-craftsmanship and displayed at the Nordic Exhibition for Industry, Agriculture and Art. After the closure of the exhibit, Queen Louise, Christian IX’s wife, had the villa reconstructed in the Bernstorff Castle Gardens as a guesthouse for Bernstorff Castle. In 1995, after a thorough restoration, the Swedish Villa was reopened for the public to be used as an arts centre and gallery, which is run by the Swedish Villa Foundation.

In the opening season, exhibitions by various highly esteemed artists, who are on their way up, can be seen in the characteristic yellow wooden villa. The Swedish Villa also sets the frame for smaller concerts and children’s arrangements. On the porch it is possible to enjoy refreshments, which can be bought at the little café.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The French Collection: Ordrupgaard’s collection of French paintings and pastels is one of the most significant in Northern Europe, and includes works by important artists of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. The French collection today consists of a total of 125 paintings, pastels, drawings and sculptures bought by Wilhelm Hansen in the years from 1916 until about 1936. The works testify to his interest in the developments in French art in the nineteenth century with the focus on Impressionism. Wilhelm Hansen had a particularly good eye for the artists Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir and Paul Gauguin, all of whom are finely represented. The collection also makes a point of showing at least one work by each of the artists who are important in the various schools around Impressionism. Thus one can say that Eugène Delacroix represents Romanticism, Théodore Rousseau the Barbizon School, Gustave Courbet Realism, Édouard Manet Modernism and Paul Gauguin Symbolism..

The Danish Collection: Ordrupgaard has a concentrated collection of Danish art from the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Most of the works testify to Wilhelm Hansen’s interest in the Danish art of his own time in its various shades: Realism and Naturalism, Impressionism and Symbolism, strongly individualistic figures like L.A. Ring and Vilhelm Hammershøi, and the group known as the "Funen Painters": Johannes Larsen, Fritz Syberg and not least Wilhelm Hansen’s friend Peter Hansen. At the same time the Danish "Golden Age" is amply represented by 40 works – by among others Eckersberg, Købke, J.Th. Lundbye, P.C. Skovgaard and Wilhelm Marstrand – and this collection concentrates on the romantic-nationalistic and sensual paintings rather than the line of the classical Eckersberg school. Apart from later new acquisitions, especially of works by Vilhelm Hammershøi and L. A. Ring, most of the 180 works of the collection – paintings, drawings and sculptures – were bought by Wilhelm Hansen in the years from 1892 until 1933.
