Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The museum has a very varied collection consisting of old master paintings, modern art, applied arts and medical items. Highlights are the very rare 16th-century altarpieces and paintings from the 17th century and the Impressionist period. The applied arts collection in the period rooms gives insight into the history of the town and its inhabitants: furniture, glass, silver, tin and objets d'arts dating from the late 16th century up to the early 20th century. A collection of instruments of torture and punishment from the late Middle Ages is housed in the basement. In addition the museum possesses a collection of antique toys and an old school-room.
The museum buildings date from the 15th century onwards and include 17th-century Regents' rooms and a 15th-century chapel. The origin as a hospital can still be seen in the old city dispensary, the surgeons' guild room, the 18th-century kitchen and an isolation cell for the insane. (museum.nl)

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The museum presents an overview of the many items which have been collected over a period of 125 years. The presentation includes large ship models, objects from the history of the port, navigational instruments, ceramic objects, glasses, globes, memorabilia, decoration of ships, shipbuilding plans, maps, posters, paintings, tile tableaus etc. and also a number of showpieces such as the internationally renowned model of a Spanish caravel, also known as the Mataró model. A central feature in the Maritiem Museum collection are the large models of wooden inland navigation and fishing vessels from the 19th century. Another striking model is that of the 'Statendam' (1917). More than four metres long, it is the largest model on display in the exhibition. There are not only models such as that of a 20th-century general cargo vessel but also, for example, models of a bucket dredge, a grain elevator and a shiploader.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The museum offers an image of the ancient harbour in the heart of Rotterdam. The harbour activities gradually moved to areas as good as inaccessible for the public like the Botlek, Europoort and the Maasvlakte. In the museum you can still have a taste of the typical sphere of the harbour in the old days. In the Leuvehaven many ships, derricks and a steam elevator are moored. The historical commercial vessels are often still in the original, ready-to-operate state and open to visitors. On the quay the hoist cranes are ready for the transhipment of goods and the boss of the slipways restores old boats on the wharf.

The Kunsthal is an exhibition complex in which approximately 25 exhibitions are organized every year. The Kunsthal presents culture in the widest sense: old art, new art, design, fashion, photography - from elitist to popular. There have been shows on Leonardo da Vinci, Donald Duck, The Hague School, M.C. Escher, the master forger Han van Meegeren, Avant-Garde art from China, urban development in India, car design in Holland, children's furniture from all over the world and 19th-century cat portraits.
