"Museum's collection
BH (History of Birstonas). The collection consists of articles-exhibits of archaeology, ethnography, household, sanatorium equipment and memorial things of people who once worked in the Birstonas health-resort; B-III. The collection is comprised of historic photographs and negatives; B.S. This collection is made of printings, documents, books, other publications, publicity materials, postcards, placards etc.; B.p.m. The collection includes various documents of poor physical state, namely rephotographs taken from other museums collections, borrowed from private persons, various advertisements about cultural events in Birstonas etc. Exposition It reflects development of the Birstonas town since the oldest times to the middle of the 19th century. The exhibited documents and their copies tell how the health-resort was established in Birstonas. Beside the specimens of first bathtubs and wooden pipes, through which mineralized water flowed to the cure-homes from springs, as well as guests’ domestic articles are shown. Another segment of the exposition represents the Birstonas health-resort in prewar years. Among exhibits are documents, their copies, photographs about the restored health-resort in years from 1922 to 1924, its further development before the war. There is a photograph immortalizing the great flood of 1958 in Birstonas. The other sections of the exposition deal with development of the health-resort, construction of its sanatoria, the town itself since 1966 when Birstonas was granted the rights of town with republican subordination. The visitors may get to know what medical procedures are presently applied in the sanatoria, what line of products offers the company UAB Birstono Mineraliniai Vandenys (Mineral Waters of Birstonas) and what like is the contemporary life of the town. Here are as well displayed personal things and photographs of Antanas and Brone Katelis, the former owners of the building. The traditional festivals of jazz in Birstonas are reflected, as well as the town’s relations with Denmark, Norway, France, Estonia, Latvia and other countries. The Museum was opened on December 26, 2000. After the opening, the Sacral Art Museum in Birstonas presents two memorial expositions to visitors. One is dedicated to Vincentas Sladkevicius, the Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, another to Teofilis Matulionis, the martyr Archbishop. There is also an exposition of sacral art containing valuable works of religious art (painting, sculpture, textile, liturgical dishes, folk art).
The memorial exposition is equipped in the premises of the former rectory. In 1957, on Christmas Day Canon Vincentas Sladkevicius was consecrated bishop. In memorial rooms the Museum’s visitors are shown valuable exhibits out of the stored and deposited collection. The exposition of sacral art contains valuable works of church art, which are taken out of the Birstonas Church of Saint Anthony from Padova and other temples of the region, as well as from the Kaisiadorys Land Museum, along with collections of the National Lithuanian Art Museum. The community of the Birstonas town and its leaders - Jonas Dalinevicius, the parson - Dean, and Antanas Zenkevicius, the Mayor of town, initiated an idea to establish a museum of sacral art in Birstonas with memorial expositions. In 1999 Vincentas Sladkevicius, the Cardinal of Respectful Memory, approved this idea. (Museums of Lithuania 2007) |

“The museum was established in 1992 in the birthplace of Jonas Maciulis-Maironis (1862-1932), a priest, poet and doctor of theology. The ethnographic display recreates the authentic environment in which the Maironis family lived.
In 1993 the road to the birthplace was decorated by pillar-type wooden crosses and miniature chapels. A memorial room was opened in the Maironis Secondary School in Betygala displaying the poet’s personal relics, books and the Maciulis family portraits. In Pasandravys, an astonishing, amazing, unusual nature’s corner, many regional cultural events take place. Poetry verses are sounding and music created together with poetry of Maironis spreads throughout. The Birthplace of Maironis is annually visited by the nation’s youngsters who are members of Maironis Organisation, also by regional and nation’s students and many others visitors who honour the creativity of Maironis.” (Museums of Lithuania) |
