Allgemeine Informationen/General information
"The abbey is located in and beside Glenstal Castle, a Normanesque castle built by the Barrington family. The picturesque grounds include lakes, forests and an old walled, terraced garden which features a "bible garden"." (Wikipedia)

Glenstal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in County Limerick, Ireland. Founded in 1927, it now numbers 50 monks. The Abbey, founded in memory of Blessed Columba Marmion, is dedicated to Saints Joseph and Columba. It belongs to the Congregation of the Annunciation, in the confederation of Benedictine monks. The monastery is directed by an Abbot, who is elected by his brothers for an eight year term.

The monks run a boarding school for boys, a farm and a guest house, and are involved in scholarly and pastoral activities. They assemble in the church five times a day for prayer (the Divine Office and the Mass), in which Gregorian chant plays a significant part.

The Guest House (12 rooms en-suite) is for those who want to spend some prayerful days in a monastic setting. Those who come are invited to attend the liturgies in the abbey church which take place several times each day. Meals are provided and, if any guest desires some spiritual guidance, that can be arranged.

Occasionally, the Guest House welcomes groups which want to work through a particular agenda. This can include help from members of the community. But for the most part, people come as individuals and so more easily absorb the atmosphere which is provided by monastic space.

The Glenstal Abbey Shop sells a wide variety of books, cards, CDs and gifts, as well as religious goods, including rosaries and medals. Along with general religious books, a range of books on Benedictine topics and by Glenstal authors is available.

Situated at the foot of Slieve Felim, with its streams, lakes and woodland paths, Glenstal Abbey is working to preserve and promote ecological balance.

Since the early '90s we have been engaged in these environmental projects:

Grounds: A research team, working on old manuscripts and maps, is guiding the rediscovery of these long inhabited lands. Their work includes the following activities: a) the 17th Century Walled Garden, the oldest terraced garden in Ireland, is being restored and brought to new life; b) a study of the postglacial origins of the forests and their continued preservation; c) an extension of the oak forest; d) participation in the international ex situ conifer conservation programme in association with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh.

House, Farm and School: We have recently completed a Wetland System to treat domestic and agricultural waste products. We are now developing ways of converting our solid wastes into energy and other resources, including the addition of a Vermery.

Other activities include: a) on-going greening of the house, viz. the efficient use of energy; the reduction or elimination of toxic cleaning fluids etc.; b) careful study of food production and diet, clothing and general health;c) educational activities, including seminars by environmental consultants to both the monks and the school pupils. (A government programme for raising consciousness on environmental issues in schools the 'Green Schools Programme', is about to be launched. The goal of this programme is the 'Green Flag' award which should be in place in the near future.)
