What was bubbling in the cooking pot of a Merovingian mother? Did she keep the leftovers in Tupperware? This museum confronts aspects of life from prehistory, the Roman period and the Middle Ages (both Early and Late) with elements of 21st-century living. Under the motto of ‘feel the past under your feet,’ you will discover the history of the city through a series of ‘do’ and ‘search’ tasks. Archaeological fi nds, replicas and reconstructions are all yours to discover in an educational yet playful manner. For each period, the daily life of the times is illuminated, using the themes ‘home’, ‘work’, ‘life’ and ‘death’. And at the end of each period, there is a ‘do-cell,’ where you can solve great archaeological mysteries!

On the fi rst fl oor of this elegant 18th-century mansion you can admire the oeuvre of the multi-talented Bruges-British artist Frank Brangwyn (1867 – 1956). He painted realistic, life-like scenes in which he recreated the hard world of the docks and factories of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition, he also left us impressions of his journeys abroad, in a series of colourful oils, watercolours and engravings. Furniture and carpet design were also among his many talents. The ground floor of the building is used for ever-changing exhibitions of expressive art, usually in association with the Groeninge Museum.

Eight almshouses from the 17th century, with a modern architectural extension, contain a collection of old objects in a series of different decors from the days of yesteryear: a classroom, a cobbler’s workshop, a hatter’s workshop, a cooper’s (barrel-maker’s) workshop, a Flemish living room, a confectioner’s bakery, a pharmacy, an inn, a tailor’s workshop, traditional textiles, and an authentic bedroom interior. Every Thursday afternoon, fresh sweets are made, using traditional recipes and techniques. Twice a year the museum opens it doors to take part in local festivals: the Aristide Festival on the first Saturday in September and the Midwinter Festival on the Sunday before Christmas.

This museum platform for contemporary art is the result of a unique collaboration between Musea Brugge and the Concert Hall. In addition to focussing attention on the city’s historic patronage, Musea Brugge also wishes to highlight contemporary art forms. This desire has come to life in Forum+. The emphasis will be placed on monographic exhibitions of sculpture, installations, etc. In addition to a ‘dose’ of modern art, the stunning location of Forum+ will also guarantee you a magnifi cent panorama of the city.

The 'House of Gruuthuse' belonged in the late Middle-Ages to the family Van Brugghe-van der Aa, a.k.a the lords of 'Gruuthuse'. This family owned the monopoly of 'Gruut' (a medieval mixture of spices used to make beer) selling. The present antiques and art collections started in 1865 by the ‘’Archeological Society’’ of Bruges. In 1955 the city of Bruges bought and expanded the collection and the museum. You will be welcomed like a king in this majestic palace of the Lords of Gruuthuse. The Gruuthuse Museum houses a wide range of objects, providing an inside look at life in the period between 1400 and 1900. These objects vary from the commonplace to the absolutely bizarre. Alongside centuries-old furniture and kitchen utensils, you can fi nd collections of arms and armour, and even a guillotine!
