Paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, textile works, installations, writings and photographs, presented through various aspects of outsider art:

Major artists in Belgian and international outsider art (which include Paul Duhem, Martha Grunenwaldt, Jean-Pol Godart, Jean-Marie Heyligen, Dwight Mackintosh, Jacques Trovic,...);
The magical worlds imagined by certain artists: Georges Counasse’s musical merry-go-rounds, the whimsical canes of Jean-Pierre Rostenne, the painted soles of cobbler Juanma Gonzalez) ; ;
Recurring themes in outsider art (repetition, use of script, etc.).

Established in 1984 as a centre for identifying and promoting outsider art, “Art en Marge” is now a museum. The artworks reflect the centre’s philosophy of promoting artists who remain in the shadows: mad or mentally disabled artists, and outsider artists with no means to access the professional art world.

Some are staying in homes for mentally disabled people, in psychiatric hospitals; others practise or have practised various crafts: photographer, junk dealers, cobbler, musician...

By stressing the content and artistic dimension of the works we intend to change the way that outsider art is perceived, encouraging viewers to ask questions rather than pass judgement.

In these early years of the 21st century the concept of ‘marginal’ (en marge) has manifestly become harder to define and defend. Thus the art currently in vogue is less and less concerned with the concepts of centre and periphery1; and at the same time, outsider art is attracting enormous interest. Furthermore, some of the artists concerned are not happy with being classified as ‘outsiders’.

Our approach maintains Art en Marge’s original philosophy: for unlike the defenders of Art Brut as initially defined by Jean Dubuffet, Art en Marge has never been opposed to mainstream art. Hence with no preconceived system and no exploitation the short-term exhibitions will endeavour to achieve a dynamic dialogue between the works of creators socially marginalized by mental illness or disability and the works of professional artists active in the mainstream.

Far from being a ‘ghetto’ museum, art)&(marges musée will be a place of exchange, a space for celebrating artists’ individualities, an art without ‘margins’, a museum where every effort is made to ensure that every visitor feels at home.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Also known under the name of Maison du Roi or Broodhuis, the Museum of the City of Brussels faces the City Hall, on the other side of the Grand-Place.

The Museum of the City of Brussels is situated in the historic heart of Brussels, on the Grand-Place. It is sheltered in a building of neo-Gothic style, result of the reconstruction made in the 19th century by the architect of the City, Victor Jamaer.

Classified in 1936, the Maison du Roi is registered, since 2000, on the UNESCO world heritage together with the whole Grand-Place.

Its history
From 1860, the City of Brussels, in full historic and urbanistic transformation has the idea to create a local museum. It begins to collect the diverse witnesses of its past and asks several artists to immortalize districts destined to be demolished.

Charles Buls, Mayor of the City, and Alphonse Wauters, the archivist, are at the origin of the project and of the creation of the first municipal museum, installed on the second floor of the Maison du Roi and inaugurated in 1887. At the time, Charles Buls already has a double objective: on the one hand, welcoming the foreign visitor, and on the other hand, making the history understandable to the local population.

The name Broodhuis (bread market) makes reference to the first affectation of the building (a wooden hall) in the 13rd century. The ground of this hall belonged however to the duke of Brabant, who lived in the 16th century when Charles the Fifth was king of Spain. This explains the French name 'Maison du Roi'.

The collections of the Museum of the City grew richer during the 20th century and present a very diversified character: models, objects like flags, bannisters, objects in ironworks, sculptures, paintings, altarpieces, tapestries, china, plans of the city, the archaeological collections,... The life of the Brusselses and the wardrobe of Manneken-Pis also have a place in the museum.

The display of collections and the various projects of the Museum are accompanied by educational activities: game intended for children and young people, a programme of guided tours and publications about several collections. These tools contribute to moving the visitors closer to the collections of the Museum of the City.

In 2008, a particular effort was dedicated to the development of the invaluable Brussels altarpieces of the 15th and 16th century. 4 tapestries of the 16th and 17th century are also exposed in the Museum. The most famous is the retable is that of Saluzzo.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Museum of Ancient Art houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 15th to the 18th century. The core of the collection is made up of works of art confiscated during the revolutionary period and works of art deposited by the French State. The collection has been subsequently enhanced thanks to not only acquisitions, but also donations and bequests from numerous patrons.

Paintings from the former Southern Netherlands represent the bulk of the collection. The works are presented in chronological order in order to allow visitors to apprehend the development and evolution of the pictorial art of these regions under the Ancien Régime.

The circuit starts majestically with the precious panels of Primitive Flemish artists such as Rogier van der Weyden, Petrus Christus, Dirk Bouts, Hans Memling and Hieronymus Bosch. Visitors then discover the rich panorama of the numerous artistic movements which developed in the 16th century, culminating in the Bruegel room where four important paintings of the master are exhibited.

Finally, the 17th and 18th centuries are brilliantly illustrated by, in particular, the retables and sketches of Pieter-Paul Rubens, all the paintings of Jacob Jordaens and the striking portraits of Anthony van Dyck.

The circuit also includes an exceptional collection of 17th and 18th century modelli in terracotta, as well as a marvellous collection of paintings representative of foreign schools.

By car :
Driving through and finding a parking space in the city centre can be difficult due to traffic. For this reason, mim strongly advises you to use one of the specially designated car parks to relieve congestion located on the outskirts of Brussels (for example, those close to the metro stations of Erasme, Delta or Kraainem) and to then take public transport.
If, however, you wish to park your car closer to the museum, we recommend that you use the Congrès-Albertine underground car park (paying).
For disabled visitors, two specially designated parking places can be found in front of the museum entrance.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
In a beautifully restored complex in Brussels, of which one part is Art Nouveau and the other, neoclassical in design, the 1200 most interesting instruments are assembled in 4 galleries, enhanced by images, text panels and sounds. In addition the mim has a concert hall, a space for workshops (for groups and by reservation only), a museum shop, a library and a rooftop restaurant, from where the breathtaking view over the city gives a unique flavour to the menu. No wonder that, since its opening in 2000, the mim has become a first class cultural attraction on the Mont des Arts, with an average of 125,000 visitors per year (not including restaurant guests).
