Brest museum of regional studies

"In 1960 the first branch "Kamenets Tower" of the Brest museum of regional studies was opened. This is a unique monument of the defense architecture at the end of 13th century. According to the Ipatyevskiy chronicle the Kamenets tower is built between 1276 and 1288 by the architect Oleksa on the river Lesnaya near Kamenets." The tower now houses an exposition. The Artistic Museum

"The Artistic Museum was opened on 17th May, 2002 in the southern part of a defensive caserne of Brest Fortress. Works of painters and masters of decorative-applied art - natives of the Brest region and living in Brest are exhibited there. In 2002 the album - catalogue «Painters of the Brest region » was published, which prepared for publication by the Brest Regional Organization of Public Association «Belarusian Union of Painters»." The Belarusian outdoor railway museum

Opened 2002. "The Brest subsidiary of Belarusian Railroads (BR) opened a railroad museum in Brest on May 15. This is a second railroad museum in the region: the first one opened in the city of Baranovichi three years ago. The museum is located on Masherova Avenue, Brest's thoroughfare, hundreds of meters away from the memorial "Brest Hero Fortress." Currently on display are about 50 rare machines - steam engines built before and after World War II, a German-made locomotive left from the war, railway cranes, and train cars. All the items exhibited are in operational condition. Arkady Priveten, director of the museum, collected the locomotives for the last ten years of his service as chief of the Brest railway depot." "The Brest Museum of Regional Studies operates since 1950 and is the largest museum of the region. The first constant exposition of the museum was opened on 22nd June, 1957. At present about 160 thousand museum objects of the basic funds and more than 54 thousand of the science-subsidiary funds are kept in the museum. There are unique collections among the fund collections: the collection of customs earnings, ethnographical, archaeological, numismatic collections, hand-written and ancient published books, excavated treasures etc.

The Numismatic collection has more than 14000 objects. Treasures, found on the territory of the Brest region, are of special interest. In 1974 during works in the village Lyschitsy, Brest district, the treasure of antique coins was found, among them a Roman dinar, belonging to the 1st-2nd century of our era. Among the awards is the award of Saint Apostle Andrey Pervozvannyj. This award is the oldest of Russian awards, and was the highest award in the tsarist Russia. The motto of the award is «For faith and fidelity».

The Ethnographic collection counts more than 2000 objects. All local regimes of traditional clothes, prevailing on the territory of the Brest region at the end of 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century, are presented here. The Kobrin and Malorita districts had unique elements of costume, a cut; here rich ornamental fabrics, headdresses, have been used. Interesting are objects of pottery, especially notable is the black-glossy ceramic of A. Tokarevskiy." http://www.brest-region.by (corrected)
