Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
"The Centre for Science Education (CSE) is a nonprofit private foundation overseen by the Greek Ministries of Education, Culture and Finance and its headquarters are located in Athens (Greece). Its vision is to enhance the awareness and knowledge of science among students and educators, as well as anyone interested to be informed on recent scientific achievements. Interactive scientific means and exhibits, which fully utilize advanced technology, and interactive learning procedures are employed in order to promote the objectives of the institution. Since its foundation in 2000, CSE has mainly focused in the establishment and operation of the European network of “House of Sciences”. Towards this objective, the institution has designed and developed exhibits, training aids and learning/educational methodologies, opting to provide an efficient and attractive science education. Through collaboration with local stakeholders, CES has contributed to the operation of the Chalkis “House of Knowledge and Science”(Greece), and has supported actions for establishment of new “House of Sciences” in the cities of Volos and Samos (Greece), Larnaca (Cyprus), and Croton (Italy). Presently CES is working towards the creation of House of Science in the city of Pescara (Italy).
Patras Science Center
In 2009 CES realized its own House of Sciences in the city of Patras. The Patras House of Science (PHS) is a place of free knowledge, open and accessible to all people who wish to approach in their own way concepts and ideas concerning natural phenomena and the scientific methods to understand them. Its main purpose is to create an educational environment which stimulates inquiring thought, curiosity and imagination, adding to the traditional classroom works the elements of inventiveness and creativity. PHS cognitive approach encourages young people to think on their own and develop new ideas, leading them to a deeper understanding of Science, through observation and experimentation. Moreover, the Patras House of Science aims to offer new opportunities for young people to communicate and cooperate with others from the wider geographic area of the Mediterranean and Europe.
During its first period of operation (February 2009 – June 2010), Patras House of Sciences hosted more than 5000 visitors, 3800 of which were students of secondary schools (including 400 students from France and Germany), 400 university students and some 850 educators. Its 3.500 m2 building includes areas for interactive exhibits and experiments, rooms suitably equipped for the collaboration of students, a state of the art, fully technologically equipped auditorium, also used for the tele-learning activities, a science café, as well as offices and auxiliary spaces.
Patras’ House of Sciences scientific/pedagogical exhibition includes more than 100 thematic sessions stemming from mathematics, informatics and physics. New exhibits from Astronomy, Chemistry and Biology will enrich PHS’‘s scientific disciplines in the near future." (Ecsite)
