Year of foundation: 2007.

„The museum was founded by the Calculus Citizens Association, in partnership with the Association of Talented Computer Scientists of Rijeka (DIR) and Kreativni Odjel (Creative Department), a multimedia agency. The aim was to create a favourite meeting point for computer enthusiasts, where they could learn and have fun.
The permanent exhibition of this interactive museum -unique in Croatia - displays some 1,000 items: about 300 computers and 700 calculators. Particular attention has been given to the Croatian computer industry and to items directly or indirectly linked with the development of informatics: the development of data storage media, technological meanderings, development of video games and consoles, and other related topics. The museum holdings continue to grow through new acquisitions and donations.
Almost all the exhibited computers function. This allows visitors not only to observe computers, but also to use them, touch them, and experience how computers were used in the past.
The museum features NetCorner, a space decorated as a living room where visitors can access the internet and use computers as if they were at home. It is also possible to scan, copy and print.
Croatian technical literature can be viewed in the reading room, while publications related to computer science can be accessed in the library.“ (Text and picture: MDC)

Year of foundation: 1961.

"Rijeka City Museum was established in 1994, when the National Revolution Museum (founded in 1961) was reorganised. The museum building, located in the park of the Governor’s Palace, was designed by the architect Neven Šegvić in 1976. That same year, the Borba daily newspaper awarded Šegvić a prize for the building's design.

The museum does not house a permanent exhibition, but organises temporary shows. In recent years, the museum has collected and restored valuable material. Numerous investigations have been conducted, successful exhibitions have been held, and extensive catalogues have been published on themes related to the history of Rijeka and its environs: The Bridges of Rijeka; The Fountains and Wash Basins of Rijeka; The Steps of Rijeka; The Port of Rijeka: History, Construction, Traffic; The Magic Needle – a collection of gramophones and Rijeka’s discography; Adamić’s Era 1780 – 1830 – Rijeka’s Merchant in a Time of Great Changesand the two most demanding projects so far, Merika – Emigration from Central Europe to America 1880 – 1914; and Torpedo of Rijeka – First in the World.

A cycle of exhibitions related to the works of artists from Rijeka encompassed the fields of architecture (I. Emil, N. Kučan, Z. Bregovac, A. Čičin Šain), photography (V. Hreljanović), painting (R. Žic), film posters (W. Stipanov), and set and costume design (D. Sokolić and R. Nenadović Sokolić) among others.

The holdings of the museum include diverse items which, for the most part, trace the life of the city in the 19th and the 20th centuries.

The collection of arts and crafts comprises furniture, glass, and ceramic items, as well as clothing owned by well-known Rijeka families.

The collection of documents comprises school certificates, diplomas, personal identity documents, maps, plans, and drawings of the city and its surroundings, from the 17th century to the present.

The press collection comprises examples of the daily press, posters and various printed material from Rijeka and its surroundings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The collection of numismatics, securities, medals and other decorations from Rijeka and its environs includes money that was printed and used in this area.

The collection of weapons and items from the Second World War includes items from partisan camps, Nazi and Fascist prisons, and personal items that belonged to war participants; the collection also contains weapons from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The visual arts collection includes drawings, prints, paintings, sculptures, sets, and costumes made by artists and other people who lived and worked in Rijeka.

The music collection holds music boxes, phonographs, gramophones, and musical instruments.

The theatre and film collection holds posters of operas, ballets, and plays performed at the Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre, and posters of films shown in Rijeka.

The philately collection comprises issues of stamps related to or that contain motifs of Rijeka from 1819 to the present.

The collection of photographs comprises original photographs, negatives, slides, photo albums, and postcards from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The technical collection holds items that attest to the technical, scientific, and economic achievements of Rijeka, a city with a rich industrial heritage (the torpedo factory, the paper factory and the oil refinery)." (Text and picture: MDC)

"The Maritime and History Museum of the Hrvatsko-primorje Region in Rijeka aims to become a dynamic and open educational institution.
Through research into the archaeological, ethnographic, artistic, cultural, and maritime history, the museum systematises and presents the development of the area of Primorsko-goranska County, the Primorje region and the city of Rijeka from prehistory to the present, and draws attention to its special features and its interactive relations with other European centres during this period of development.

After the Second World War, the Rijeka City Museum – Museo Civico di Fiume (founded in 1893) - and the Sušak City Museum merged to become the Museum of the Croatian Littoral.

The museum is situated in one of Rijeka’s most beautiful architectural works from the late 19th century. The Neo-Renaissance palace was designed by Hungarian architect Alajos Hauszmann and was built as the residence for the governor. Some of the interiors that were shaped by the contractors, painters, and sculptors from Rijeka, Trieste, and Budapest have been preserved in their original form.
The museum keeps material from Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and from Rijeka, as the city has been its centre from prehistory to the 20th century.
The museum's rich holdings are divided as follows: the Archaeological Department, with prehistoric, Antique and medieval collections; the Department of Maritime History, with historic reconstructions of ships, items of ship equipment, nautical instruments, and maps; and the Ethnographic and Cultural and Historical Department.

The museum’s lapidarium holds stone monuments from the 1st to the 19th century and consists of archaeological or accidental finds from the inner city area, parts of destroyed architectural monuments and inscriptions, and coats of arms of Rijeka's patrician families and captains. Besides several Roman inscriptions, there is an altar dedicated to the pre-Roman Liburnian divinity Sentona, early medieval fragments, and two paterae from the 12th and 13th centuries. In the group of inscriptions, two items from the 16th century are particularly valuable: a beam with an inscription by the master craftsman Gašpar from 1561, and a tablet with an inscription by Archdeacon Grahovac. An interesting collection contains familial coats of arms (for example, the coat of arms of the Carminelli family from AD 1500) and the coats of arms of the city of Rijeka from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Governor's Palace is something of an exhibit in itself as it depicts the history of the city, especially its political, cultural and economic history. The museum aims to maintain a segment of the palace which best represents its history. The White Salon, the Marble Hall, and the impressive atrium on the first floor have all been preserved in their original states.

Through the Window of the Governor's Palaceand The Time Traces are thematic units of the permanent exhibition.

The exhibition From Fidelissima to the Dearest Rijeka, located in the ceremonial halls of the palace, covers the political history of the city. The exhibition begins with the painting Arrival of Emperor Charles VI in Rijeka and models illustrating the city in the early 18th and mid-20th centuries. In addition, there are interactive attractions that add to the given information about the most important city buildings. The painting Submission of Rijeka to Hungary in 1776 evokes the events that followed the establishment of Severin County. Aside from the portrait of the first Governor Josef Maylath, there are also portraits of another thirteen governors who had administered Rijeka from 1776 to the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 in the study. A portrait of Lajos Batthyány, a politician during the time the Governor's Palace was built, is displayed among them. Visitors can also see the former library, which now houses portraits of members of the Habsburg Monarchy, as well as a large portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It also contains the cup that he donated to the city of Rijeka in 1875, which inaugurated the establishment of the museum.

The White Salon displays portraits of the Great Prefect Bartol Benedikt Zmajić and his wife Ana, valuable works by the Rijeka painter G. Simonetti, and an unusual set of polychrome sculptures of the devil and his fiancée.

For a time the Italian poet, bohemian and adventurer Gabriele d'Annunzio – (who ruled Rijeka for 16 months from 1919–1920) - had his home in the Governor's Palace. The palace was bombed in order to facilitate his banishment from Rijeka. A portrait of d’Annunzio, a portrait of the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele, the painting Italia o Morte by Carlo Wostry, films, and documents depict the period of the rule of D'Annunzio, the independent State of Rijeka, and the Italian administration that lasted until 1943.

Many entrepreneurs, scientists, and artists have left their mark on Rijeka. The exhibits include portraits of: Andrija Ljudevit Adamić, a trader who was involved in building Rijeka in the early 19th century, and members of his family; Count Laval Nugent, the owner of Trsat, a field marshal, collector, and the founder of the first museum in Rijeka; the printer Karletzky with his wife; and Karolina Belinić, known as Caroline of Rijeka, who saved Rijeka from the shelling of 1813. There is also a portrait of Anibale Ploech, one of the inventors of torpedoes, and a bust of Dr. Franjo Kresnik (1869-1943), a physician from Sušak, as well as an expert Cremonese luthier and violinmaker.

The interiors illustrate the Central European civic culture of the 19th century via an abundance of utility and decorative glass and porcelain items. In addition to the stylish and functionally valuable items made of glass, ceramics, and metals, there are interesting clocks from the early 18th to the mid-20th century, including clocks made by famous French, English, Swiss, and Hungarian clockmakers. Particularly interesting items include a standing clock with a wooden mechanism made by an unknown German master, a tabernacle clock made by the 18th century London clockmaker Daniel Quare, as well as a mantelpiece clock made by the Rijeka clockmaker Ferdinand Busetti in 1870.
The exhibition of weapons displays weapons characteristic of the 17th through mid-20th centuries.

The gallery on the second floor presents portraits of sea captains, as well as paintings, models, ship logs, documents, and ship equipment illustrating the Kvarner seafarers’ journeys across the oceans of the world. The gallery also displays 12 paintings by the greatest portraitist of sailing ships of the 19th century, Bartol Ivanković; the log of the boat Stefano, including the first Aboriginal-Italian dictionary of maritime terminology; and a life preserver from the Titanic." Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Year of foundation: 1948.
Museum has occasional exhibitions.

"The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Rijeka was founded in 1948, and was opened to the public in 1949. It is located in a Historicist building in the very centre of Rijeka. Despite the exceptionally rich holdings of the museum, a suitable exhibition space has not yet been found for the permanent collection. Nevertheless, the museum often organises contextual exhibitions of its collections, as well as exhibitions and events on diverse forms of artistic expression (RijekaSalon, Biennial of Young Artists of Yugoslavia, Biennial of Young Artists of the Mediterranean, International Exhibition of Drawings, BQ). Based on its programmes, the museum has built a reputation as one of the most prestigious institutions in the field of visual arts in Croatia.

The plan is to build a new museum building where the rich and diverse holdings of the MMCA (more than 8,000 works from the late 19th century to the present) will be exhibited.

The museum collections (paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, posters, media arts, film and video, and the R. Venucci, B. Rašica, S. Grčko, and M. Ilić specialised collections) provide an artistic and historical overview of works by predominantly local artists, dating from the end of the 19th century to the present. As a result of this exhibition structure, it is possible to reconstruct the major artistic movements in Croatia and its surrounding region, parallel to international trends. These collections include the representative works of leading artists, art collectives, movements, and individual expressions in Croatia, (especially those from the second half of the 20th century) that follow the tradition of modernity and the living reality of contemporary art. Besides these works, the museum also possesses works by foreign artists from the same period.

The best and most fully represented in the collection of paintings are the works by artists whose lives and activities were related to Rijeka and/or Opatija, primarily those of I. (G.) Simonetti, R. Venucci, I. Kalina, and J. Smokvina. There are exceptionally valuable oils and watercolours by J. Smokvina, as well as masterpieces of Croatian abstract expressionism and flamboyantly treated collages from the 1960s by I. Kalina. Kalina is one of the top painters of late modernism whose work has strongly influenced other contemporary artists from Rijeka (Stipanov, Frank, Milić, Sorola-Staničić, and other artists).

Works created by artists in Rijeka, particularly those paintings by Simonetti and the pieces by A. Angelovic and the other representatives of the Biedermeier, realist, and academic painting of the 19th century are particularly distinctive because of their particular quality and uniqueness. These paintings represent portraits of the citizens of Rijeka, panoramas, landscapes, interiors, and genre scenes (M. Ostrogovich, C. Ostrogovich, and I. Moretti Zajc). Especially interesting is the group of artists from Rijeka who were active between the two world wars. They were influenced by Italian art and brought certain artistic novelties through their works that combined futuristic and art deco elements (R. Venucci, L. de Gauss, M. Arnold, M. Raicich, and other artists.)

There is also a collection of works by one of the greatest artists of Rijeka, Romolo Venucci (1903-1976), whose life reflected the most important changes of the city and its history. This collection consists of his most important works in post-Cubism, cubist constructivism, and futurism, as well as his personal documents.

The collection of Božidar Rašica (1912-1992) - an architect, set designer, and painter from Zagreb - includes his artistic opus from 1930 to 1992. His opus forms a crucial part of the history of 20th century Croatian visual art. Rašica was a co-founder of the EXAT 51 Group and one of the key figures in Croatian post-war modern architecture and theatre set design.

The collection of sculptures includes famous works by Croatian artists from Rijeka: Lj. de Karina, B. Bahorić, Z. Kamenar, J. Diminić, V. Radoičić, M. Zrinšćak, G. Štimac, S. Majkus, N. Ukić, and S. Stilinović.

The collection of drawings includes pieces by local and foreign artists that were collected as independent works of art and as examples of the stylistic trademarks particular to certain artists. Since 1968 the collection has been complemented with works exhibited at the International Exhibition of Original Drawings, launched by the MMCA with the aim of evaluating and popularising artistic drawings.

In addition to the representative works by local and national art photographers, the collection of photographs also includes works by Pedro Meyer and Marcus Doyle.
The works in the collection of prints present a chronological overview of the development of Croatian graphics from the late 19th century to the present. The collection also includes works by foreign artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The collection of media arts, film and video includes productions by Croatian artists such as A. Kulunčić, A. Floričić, T. Brajnović, L. Sega, N. Cvijanović, D. Maljković, and D. Oki.

Among the artists whose works are included in the collection of posters (museum, theatre, tourist, and political posters), Z. Pliskovac, V. Radoičić, V. A. Rozman, and A. Brajdić stand apart from the other designers from Rijeka." (Text and picture: MDC)

The Museum has occasional exhibitions.

"The museum is located in the family mansion of Count Negroni that was built in 1925. It was opened to the public in 1946. The origins of the museum date back to the late 19th century when the natural sciences were developing; the period was marked by a growth in the research and scientific interest in the sea around the Kvarner area and the emergence of numerous private collections.

The Natural History Museum of Rijeka acts as a scientific and educational institution, and is the only institution dealing with the biological and ecological study of the sea in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It works intensively on popularising the natural sciences.
The museum manages 29 collections, which hold approximately 90,000 artifacts.

The arrangement of the permanent display by topic began in 1998, accompanied by the introduction of new information technologies.

One of the most impressive displays is Sharks and Rays, which displaystaxidermied fish in dioramas of their natural habitat, accompanied by a multimedia presentation (photographs, images, and video sequences).

The permanent exhibition Geological History of the Adriatic shows the genesis and development of the Adriatic Sea basin, while Geology of the Rijeka Region is devoted to local geological development.
The ground floor of the museum features an aquarium multimedia centre that includes a workshop/play area with educational games based on natural history, as well as a gallery for temporary exhibitions.

The displays Birds and Mammals of the Rijeka Region and Reptiles and Amphibians of the Rijeka Region are presented in dioramas. The displayInsects of the Rijeka Region is yet another curiosity of this museum.
All exhibitions include CDs or DVD-ROMs with natural science content. Also included are educational games and quizzes to test knowledge.

There is a Coastal Botanical Garden in the vicinity of the museum that was cultivated in 2005, which features the most common plant species in this region. The Botanical Garden also provides educational activities and a space for visitors to relax.“ (Text and picture: MDC)

Matulji is rich in carnival traditions and in customs where authenticity is still well-preserved. It is also the area with the largest number of traditional bell ringers' groups.
The Sparkle of the Bell Ringers Museum – Bell Ringers Museum Collectionproject includes bell ringers' equipment from groups in the area of the Matulji Municipality (a total of nine groups: the bell ringers of Rukavac, Zvoneća, Brgud, Mune, Žejane, Mučići, Vlahov Breg-Korensko, Bregi, and Frlanija). Each group has their own peculiarities regarding their equipment and rituals, all of which have been listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The collection includes materials related to the whole of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Future plans for the collection include collecting bell ringers' masks from other parts of Croatia and other countries with similar traditions." (MDC)
