The collection of Maksimilijan Vanka, along with his house and studio in Korèula, were donated to the Academy in 1964 by his widow, Margaret Stettin Vanka. Vanka's villa was adapted for the presentation of the Memorial Collection, and its was opened to the public in 1969. Maksimilijan Vanka (Zagreb, 11 October 1889-Puerto Vallorta, Mexico, 2 February 1963) is an important name in modern Croatian painting. He wad educated in Zagreb and Brussels. He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb until his departure to the United States in 1936. The collection of Maksimilijan Vanka in Korèula presents a cross-section of his work from the 1920s until his death. It consists of dozens of paintings, watercolors, pastels and drawings, showing Vanka's art from the monumentalism of New Reality, through the influence of Van Gogh and expressionism, to later constructivist tendencies. The newly adapted building which houses the collection was opened in 1998.

"The Archaeological Museum in Split, the oldest museum establishment in Croatia, was founded in 1820 as a result of a decree of the government of Dalmatia in Zadar. The founding was prompted by the visit to Dalmatia of Emperor Franz I in 1818, when he visited Split and the monuments of Salona/Solin. The first building of the museum was put up in 1821 alongside the eastern walls of Diocletian’s Palace, but it soon became too small for the increasing number of monuments. A new era in the development of Croatian archaeology was marked by the work of Don Frane Bulić, director of the museum from 1884. Don Frane Bulić (Vranjic, 1846 – Zagreb, 1934), Catholic priest, archaeologist, historian and conservator, worked for more than 50 years exploring the field, writing and doing conservation. He was the founder of the Croatian archaeological association called Bihać, founded in Split in 1894. He is also to be credited with the building of the current home of the Archaeology Museum in Split, erected in 1914 according to plans by Viennese architects Kirstein and Ohman. The architectural complex consists of the main building with exhibition hall in the ground floor and library and study offices on the first floor, a lapidarium and a well arranged garden. The museum carries out regular archaeological research at three sites – Salona, Narona and Issa, and also has a branch in Solin – Tusculum – and the Issa Archaeological Collection in Vis. The collections hold about 150,000 archaeological objects (from prehistory, the Roman and Early Christian periods, and from the Early Middle Ages and the age of the Croatian royal dynasty). There is a very valuable collection of stone inscriptions from Salona (about 6,000), a collection of Hellenistic ceramics, Roman glass, ancient clay lamps (about 1600 items) objects of bone, of metal, and the country’s biggest gemstone collection. The museum looks after a large collection of coins from Antiquity and the medieval period (more than 70,000 items) and also has major library and archival holdings. The new permanent display in the renovated museum was opened on December 18, 2000." (Text: MDC)

Year of foundation: 1820.
The Museum has a restoration workshop.

"The Gallery of Fine Arts was opened in 1931 as the Gallery of Fine Arts of the Coastal Banovina. It was then located in the building at Lovretska 11, and at the opening 300 pieces were shown, from the 500 that had been assembled. During the seventy subsequent years the holdings have been enriched with purchases, donations and bequests, a particularly important legacy being that of Dr Ivo Tartaglia, which brought the gallery more than 300 artworks. Today the holdings consist of a specific, diverse and very interesting whole. The more than 3,400 works of art cover the period since the 14th century, giving a review of all the most significant artistic phenomena and trends in the region. In the older artworks section, works of Paolo Veneziano stand out, after which there are works of Andrija Aleši, Andrija Medulić, Girolamo Brusaferro, and a fine icon collection. In the collections of modern and contemporary art, in terms of number of quality, the works of Vlaho Bukovac, Emanuel Vidović, Mate Celestin Medovic, Juraj Plančić, Marino Tartaglia and Ivan Meštrović are particularly to the fore. The art of the 20th century is represented by the very valuable works of Ivo Dulčić, Antun Masle, Slavko Kopač, Branko Ružić, Kosta Angeli Radovani and Đuro Seder, for example. Since its foundation, the gallery has had a very lively exhibiting activity. Apart from exhibitions of works from the gallery’s own holdings, in which outstandingly interesting oeuvres and units are studied and presented to the public (Vidović, Medović, Uvodić, Katunarić and others), there is also ongoing work on the presentation of works by contemporary Croatian artists (Martinis, Žuvela, Sokić, Petercol, Ivančić, Faktor, Rakoci, Trbuljak, for example). Since 2000 there has been a cycle of exhibitions of young authors, in an effort to give a review of events in this area of the art scene in Croatia. There is also a restoration workshop that belongs to the gallery, its work being channelled to the conservation and restoration of works from the collections, thus enabling them to be presented to the public. The gallery possesses a library that is partially open to readers, and it has 14,000 titles. Since 1931 the gallery has been housed in the originally intended leased building in Lovretska Street, in which it has worked at least partially to this day, but which has poor museological conditions. The old idea about location the Fine Arts Gallery in the premises of the Old Hospital was brought up again in 1991, after the Museum of the Revolution was closed down. In 2001 the Split municipal authority adopted a decision to allot the Old Hospital to the Gallery of Fine Arts. Plans for conversion and extension of the building have been made, and the works are now in progress." (Text and picture: MDC)

The museum has a restoration workshop.

The Museum runs occasional exhibitions.

"Split Municipal Museum has since 1950 been located in the Papalić Palace inside Diocletian’s Palace. The museum assembles, preserves and presents the material and spiritual past of the city of Split since the most ancient times and up to the 20th century. The museum was founded in 1946, when it was located in the Bernardi Palace, while the germs of the museum go back to the second half of the 19th century and the Municipal Library (today the University Library). From 1984 the general repair, renovation and extension of the museum complex was conducted, finishing in 1992, when for the first time in its history the museum opened up the whole of its display to the public. The working space with workshops, library and stores is on the whole in the western part of the complex. The restoration workshops are engaged on objects from the museum collections. The institution possesses a library, mainly with holdings concerning Split and Dalmatia that, apart from to museum staff is also accessible to some outside readers. The premises for occasional exhibitions are in the ground floor of the complex. Part of the space inside the palace has a special entry into the courtyard and Papalićeva ulica, while the Gallery, located in the western part, enables communication with Dioklecijanova ulica. Another part of the museum is the Vidović Gallery, located on Poljana kraljica Jelena by the Silver Gate, dedicated to the most important painter from Split and one of the best known representatives of Croatian modern painting." The Croatian Maritime Museum in Split was founded in 1997 with a decision of the city council of Split, and the municipal authority is thus the founder and owner of the museum. It was opened to the public in 2000 with the exhibition Ships, Weapons, Wars. It is classified as a specialised type of museum institution, its basic task being to research, assemble, preserve and present the material and intangible maritime heritage mainly from the Croatian Adriatic ever since prehistory. The museum is located in a prime heritage building – Gripe Fort, a unique entirely preserved fortification structure in Split built in the 17th century, which was made the object of a Ministry of Culture protection order in 2006. The museum has 1,260 square metres of indoor space and several thousand metres of open air courtyard space in which some of the exhibits are located. Most of the indoor space is used as exhibition space for the interim display – 8 exhibition rooms with about 900 square metres. The archives and library of the museum are open to all members of the public who need expertise in this area." (Text: MDC)

The museum was founded, at the initiative of Umberto Girometta, in 1924. Until 1925 it was housed in the building of the Commune House, after which it was transferred to the building on the first peak of Marjan, in which it was opened on April 5, 1926, together with the Zoological Garden. The museum was on show in the Marjan building until 1991, when, because of its ruinous condition, it was closed to visitors. While it was working on Marjan, the permanent display was changed twice. After two moves, in 2001 the museum obtained its current quarters, in which it started working in January 2002. During the past six years several different thematic exhibitions have been put on and the interim permanent display of the Bakotić Family Shell Collection was opened. Preparations for the creation of the permanent display are underway.

The museum has a preparation workshop.

"The Ethnographic Museum in Split is the oldest museum of its type in Croatia. It was founded on July 3, 1910. In 1924 it moved into the building of the Council Chamber on Pjaca, and remained there until the end of 2004. Then the museum was allocated new premises in Severova ulica, and with the exhibition White on White it was opened on May 5, 2004, thus starting the first phase of the new premises. The museum collects ethnographic objects from the area of Dalmatia and the wider area. It preserves and promotes the values of the ethnographic heritage, restores them and presents them to the public. It has very valuable collections of folk costumes, jewellery, arms, household inventory, traditional handicrafts. The museum issues the annual “Ethnologica Dalmatica”, books, catalogues and CDs."
