The first excavation in Hungary can also be connected to Aquincum: by the end of the 18th century the University teacher István Schönvisner found the sauna of the military bath on Óbuda. The excavations started in 1881 and they still last today. The visible ruins of the Aquincum Civil Town represent the excavated one third of the central settlement. First the amphitheatre was excavated and then the centre of the old civic town.
