Our Museum is housed in a restored 19th Century farm building, which was originally a wood-working shop.

On display are all manner of items from the house, in an area protected by glass.

Many old Account Books and Letters, from the previous two centuries, have been taken from 52 archive boxes dating from 1830 to the present day. They mostly relate to the Tyrrell family who lived in the house from 1895 and to the Bor family who built the house in 1822.

Antique butter churners, an automatic knife sharpener from the Victorian era, a poacher trap, a glass water filter, antique kitchen paraphernalia and many other items can be seen, including a Victorian collection of bird's eggs, and even a huge fresh water pike on display in its original glass case.

Around the walls the history of the house and gardens is depicted in words and pictures.

Castletown is the largest and most significant Palladian style country house in Ireland. Built originally c.1722 for the speaker of the Irish House of Commons, William Conolly (1622- 1729) the designs of a number of important architects were used, notably Alessandro Gailiei, Sir Edward Lovett Pearce and later Sir William Chambers.

The house is now occupied by the 6th generation of the same family. An attractive Georgian house built in the 1830’s , originally used as a shooting lodge. There was a large area of the surrounding peatland owned by the estate. This was taken away when the government set up Bord na Mona and started harvesting peat for electricity generation in the 1940’s.

The house was built by Robert Mackay Wilson. It has been added to and modernised over the years, and is now a very comfortable family home.

The church was built in the 1880’s also by Robert Mackay Wilson. It has some very interesting stained glass windows and Gaelic scripts on the walls chosen by Douglas Hyde, the first President of Ireland, on the walls. There are regular Sunday services held.

The farm is a mix of cropping, grassland and forestry.
