The museum was founded in 1935 on the initiative of Dzukai ethnographic society. The museum contains archaeological finds, ethnographic exhibits, printed matter, photographs, and a rich collection of numismatic.
More than 52 000 displays dating from the period of Neolithic till 1999 are kept in the museum. This is historical, ethnographic, archaeological material having got into the museum from the districts of the South Lithuania: Alytus, Varena, Lazdijai, and Druskininkai.

The Museum is honoring the legendary S. Dariaus and S. Gireno airplane "Lituanica". There are about 2,000 items on exhibit including photos, pictures, numismatics and philately. There are both national and international newspaper and magazine articles dating back to mid July 1933.

"Founded in 1989, the museum is located in the hometown of the writer Antanas Jonynas (1923-1976), where he lived until 1940.
A. Jonynas lived here until 17yrs old, when due to illness he lost sight and left to study in Kaunas. 573 exponents are guarded in the museum, while 184 of them are in the basic fund.
The museum's collection is made up of Antanas Jonynas books, manuscripts, Braille literary works, photos, photo negatives and the writer's personal objects.
