Pçteris Upîtis was born in May 19, 1896 near Jumurda, Cçsis district. His interest in horticulture was born already in childhood, and became his life's greatest love. Until 1913 P.Upîtis studies at the Priekuïi Agricultural School, after that he continues self-education. The young Latvian horticulturist visits the largest horticultural centres of Europe. Intense correspondence with horticulturists all over the world, exchange of information and seeds continues all his lifetime.

After graduating the Agricultural School, a 16 pomological orchard is planted at his parents' farm "Jaun-Rûsiòi", a laboratory for soil and fruit biochemical content analyses is built. The successful work is destroyed by World War II, when,

"... all scattered to winds. Only tulips

grow on in the meadow."

(I.Ziedonis)

In the autumn of 1945 P.Upîtis starts his work at the Latvian Academy of Agriculture, registering and studying the fruit landraces. On his bike he has travelled all over Latvia, collecting and describing the most interesting fruit tree seedlings.

A horticulturist needs a garden. It is found at Dobele, where until June 14, 1941 the Brothers Vârna Nursery worked in Lauciòi. The former nursery became a base for an experimental farm. Since 1957 P.Upîtis starts to plant his own gardens in the heavy, fertile soil of Dobele. He works with 24 horticultural crops, their breeding and introduction: apricots, apples, pears, plums and cherries, filberts and walnuts, quinces, raspberries, strawberries etc. One of his successes was lilac breeding. His lilac varieties 'Mâte Ede Upîtis', 'Liega', Gaiziòkalns', 'Esîbas Prieks' and others are well known in Latvia and abroad. The lily varieties 'Brûnupîte', 'Dzintarlâse' also deserve notice.

The breeder had set as his aim to select for Latvia new fruit varieties with high winter hardiness and fruit quality. From his wide breeding material are coming the apple varieties 'Ausma', 'Ilga', 'Magone', 'Velte' and others, pear varieties 'Jumurda', 'Paulîne', sweet cherries 'Aija', 'Indra', 'Jânis', apricots 'Daiga', 'Lâsma', 'Velta', 'Dzintars', 'Rîtausma', plums 'Minjona', 'Zemgale', 'Ziedture' and others, raspberry variety 'Ivars', strawberry 'Jûnija Smaids'.

The famous horticulturist was also an artist at his heart, his hobbies included photography, poetry, music. Dobele became a visiting place for artists and writers. P.Upîtis' complex relations with the powers-that-be deserve a special story.

Pçteris Upîtis died on April 4, 1976. His garden is still known as "Upîtis garden" by the people of Latvia.

"(15th century) – located at a strategic location where the rivers Musa and Memele merge to form the river Lielupe, it was a stronghold of the Livonian Order and later the seat of the dukes of Kurzeme. Now the impressive ruins remain a romantic place for walks and concerts. The tower commands a panoramic view and the renovated section houses a museum." (LatviaTourism)

“The first written records of the Bauska Castle date back to 1443 when the Order of Livonia built a fortress at the confluence of the rivers Musa and Memele.
At the end of the 16th century Gothard Kettler, the first Duke of Courland, transformed the fortress into a fortified residence. In the 17th and 18th centuries a fortification was built around the castle. In 1706, during the Northern War, the castle was blown up and partly destroyed by the Russian army. In 1973 reconstruction work started on the Duke's residence. At present the ramparts around the castle, the ruins of the Order's Castle and the sightseeing platform in the central tower are accesible to the public. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the Duke's residence which is still under reconstruction.“ (Latvian Museum Association)
