The museum’s department “Liepaja during the occupational regimes” was opened on the 21st January 2001. Its mission is to maintain collective historic memory of the nation in order to strengthen its national self-consciousness, which is state system’s ideological and emotional basis, while recounting historic questions considering the loss of state system and occupational period. This department is situated in the building that during the Awaking period used to be the lodging of the Latvian National Front in Liepaja – 7/9, K.Ukstina Street.

The basic layout reflects the influence of international treaties of 1939 (Molotov-Ribentrop Pact and the USSR and Latvia’s mutual help treaty) on the Liepaja region socially politic, economic and cultural life – repatriation of german-baltics, the events of 1940-1942 – the beginning of the soviet occupational regime, socially economic transformations and changes, Liepaja during the Second World War, the repeated soviet occupation, deportations of 1941 and 1949, gulag, the Third Awaking, including the period of time from 1939 till 1991.

There is also Janis Laditis’ photo collection layout situated in this department. Besides, the museum’s collection and art thematic exhibitions are organized.

“On May, 1879, German Baron Otto Friedrich von Lilienfeld founded a port town and named it after his brother Paul Lilienfeld, Governor of Kurzeme (1868-1885) - Paulshafen, or Pavilosta. He also laid the foundation stone in the pilot's house, the first brick building in Pavilosta. Since 1992 this building has housed the Pavilosta Regional Studies Museum. The museum stores more than 6 143 exhibits. Over 1000 of them are on display in the permanent exhibition that tells about the history of Pavilosta and Saka district. Many unique historical items have been found in the Saka civil parish including stone and bone axes, bronze brooches and belts and even such a rarity as a honey press.“ (Latvian Museum Association)
