Öffnungszeiten/Opening hours
Tue-Sun 11-17h.
Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Drents Museum is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. The collections count more than 85.000 objects and the museum has 5.000 m² of space for public events and exhibitions. The main themes are: Archaeology (mainly finds from prehistoric and Roman times), Dutch art and applied arts from the period 1885 – 1935, Figurative Art and Drents Cultural History.
The best known parts of the Cultural History collection are most likely Drents regional costumes and Drents silver, but the collection also contains old arts and crafts, weights and measures, agricultural tools, peat excavation tools and traditional trade tools. The museum also boasts a large collection of objects from the lifestyle in Drenthe.
The Figurative Art collection (with work by, among others, Henk Helmantel, Matthijs Röling, Sam Drukker, Douwe Elias, Barend Blankert and Berend Groen) by now contains many hundreds of works, and is one of the of the most important collections in this field in the Netherlands.
The museum is located on the site of the medieval Cistercian nunnery Maria-in-Campis, of which only the renovated and partially rebuilt Abbey church is left; the former Abbey church now houses the temporary exhibitions. The other buildings that form the Drents Museum are the the Bailiff’s House and the Taxcollector’s House which date from the 18th century, and the former Provincial Government Building from the late 19th century.
