Nieuw Land Heritage Centre presents and preserves the larger part of the archives and museum collections of Flevoland. The collections of the Nieuw Land Heritage Centre include six thousand year old archaeological finds from the days when Flevoland was still an extensive marshland. A great deal has been preserved from later periods also. The collections offer a wealth of information about the Zuyder Zee Project, the closure and reclamation of the Zuyder Zee and the development of 165,000 ha new land.
Near by the centre you will find Port Batavia, the home base of a few dozen historic ships of the Hanzestad Company, the Batavia yard with its authentic reconstruction of the seventeenth-century East Indiaman, the Batavia and also the Netherlands Institute for Ships and Underwater Archaeology (NISA).

The Batavia Yard is foremost a center for traditional shipbuilding. Over 200 young people have built an authentic reconstruction of the VOC-merchantman Batavia from 1628.
The National Centre for Maritime Archaelogy (NISA) has moved to a site next to the Batavia Yard. The idea is to create a centre where archaeological research and historical shipbuilding exist side by side and are easily accessible to visitors. A maritime archaeological pavilion houses the impressive wreck of a late 16th century marketboat found in Lelystad in 1980.

Öffnungszeiten/Opening hours
From Tuesday till Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed on first Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Aviodrome, with its very large collection of historic planes, is a aviation theme park offering an interactive exposition in which authentic Dutch aircrafts are presented together with visual and sound effects. Museum guests can for example board the 'Pelikaan', a beautifully simulated pre-war KLM Fokker airliner. In the 'top-down' theatre visitors take on the role of passengers in a hot air balloon. The concept of flight is explained in the 'aviation lab'; hands-on experiments show how and why aircraft can fly. A 250-seat movie theatre offers spectacular viewing of wide screen aviation films and in the T-2 hangar outside, the Douglas DC-2 'Uiver', the last flying DC-2 in the world, can be seen.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
For centuries, Schokland was a densely populated island in the Zuiderzee. But the sea level kept rising and in 1859, after repeated flood disasters, the island was evacuated. In 1942 a large part of the former Zuiderzee was reclaimed, wich meant that Schokland ceased being an island and could be reached from all sides via the former sea floor. Schokland was the first monument in the Netherlands to be included on the Unesco World Heritage List.
The exhibitions in the museum bring the curious history of the Noordoostpolder to life. They emphasize the traces of prehistoric and medieval habitation that existed here, the history of the Zuiderzee sea trade and naturally the story of land reclamation, the last step in the battle against the sea.
