Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The development of Hindeloopen from the early Middle Ages until well into the 20th century is shown on the basis of prints, paintings and photographs.
The history of the small town on what used to be the Zuiderzee dates back to the year 779. Through the ages parts of the town disappear under water due to floods. Around 1880 fishery becomes a major source of income. The harbour still forms the centre of Hindeloopen life today.
The seasons rooms represent a year in the life of the Hindeloopen captains who sailed the Baltic Sea in the early 18th century: the departure for their far-off destination (spring), the trade in the Baltic countries (summer), the return to the harbour of Amsterdam (autumn) and life at home in Hindeloopen (winter).
In the Hindeloopen house of approx. 1740 the painted furniture, the tiled walls, the abundance of Chinese porcelain and various decorative objects and utensils bear witness to the love and care that was devoted to the household centuries ago.

Hindeloopen painting - Hindeloopen painted furniture is world-famous. Box bed panelling, drop-leaf tables, cupboards, miniature furniture: in the 18th century everything is painted in the typically Hindeloopen colours and patterns.

The Hindeloopen costume - The Hindeloopen female costume is very colourful thanks to the combination of flowered (chintzes) and chequered (East Indian checks) materials and the separate headdress. Around 1880 this costume disappears from the scene. All variations of the women’s, the men’s and the different children’s costumes are on display in the museum.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The world's oldest functioning planetarium is to be found in the living room of a Friesian canalside house. This accurately moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by the wool carder Eise Eisinga. The model is kept in motion by an gear mechanism that uses wooden hoops and disks with about 10,000 hand-forged nails as teeth. The gear mechanism is controlled by a pendulum clock and nine weights.
Besides this model Eisinga also built special clocks that indicate the day, the date, the rising and setting of the sun and moon, the apparent movement of the heavens due to the rotation of the earth, and other phenomena.
The Planetarium also has an extensive collection of historic astronomical instruments on display and devotes a lot of attention to modern astronomy and space exploration.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Tresoar was founded in 2002 by a merger of three separate institutes that dealt with Frisian History and Literature:
- the Provincial and Buma library (PBF)
- the Public Records Office in Friesland (RAF)
- the Frysk Letterkundich Museum en Dokumintaasjesintrum (FLMD)
The FLMD was established in 1959 by Frisian linguists believing there was a need for a special institute to protect the Frisian literary historian heritage. The FLMD was holding an impressive collection of books and magazines. Of special interest was the collection of letters and manuscripts of authors and the archives of the Fryske Beweging (Frisian Movement), an institute for the preservation and promotion of the Frisian language. The FLMD was also running a museum collecting and exhibiting photographs, portraits and items of every day use on the same topic. The institute was reaching out to all kinds of cultural events in Fryslân and in the Frisian language, acting as some kind of shop-window for the Frisian language in every way.
The new institute has combined the three major and most important collections, mainly relating to Frisian literature and history. The various search systems are overlapping one another in order to enable optimum access. Tresoar will not only encourage people using the Friesland collection, but also organise activities and give advice on history, literature and culture.
