(Noord-Holland)
Google Maps
Träger/Financial provider:
National Foundation De Nieuwe Kerk
Öffnungszeiten/Opening hours
During exhibitions: daily from 10 am to 6 pm.
Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
De Nieuwe Kerk is one of the most attended exhibition locations in the Netherlands. The major exhibitions held in the Nieuwe Kerk each winter are devoted to treasures from other countries and cultures. In the last few years, the exhibition policy has been expanded to include a ''world religion'' theme. Striking exhibitions like Islam, The Black Pharaohs, The Way to Heaven, and Mexico - journey to the land of the gods, were for many a first exciting glimpse into these religions and cultures. At other times throughout the year, the Nieuwe Kerk collaborates on exhibitions with other Dutch museums.
Many famous and less well-known figures from Dutch history are buried in the church in elaborately decorated tombs, among them Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Also, since almost two centuries, the Nieuwe Kerk functions as the inaugural church for the Kings and Queens of the Netherlands.

Behind the characteristic facade of the house by the canal lies a largely original 17th-century home and a complete hidden church. This hidden church 'in the attic' was built during the Reformation, when Catholics were forbidden to hold public services. Today, the church and the house form the backdrop to a succession of exhibitions highlighting religion and contemporary art. The museum has a magnificent collection of paintings, sculpture and silver providing an overview of Catholic history in Amsterdam. In addition to the building and its permanent presentation, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions and regular activities for the public. After the Rijksmuseum it is the city's oldest museum.
The church is still being used for concerts, weddings and other private functions.

The Royal Palace
Dam 1
NL-1012 JS Amsterdam
(Noord-Holland)
Google Maps
Öffnungszeiten/Opening hours
The Royal Palace will be closed for renovations for more than two years from 8 September 2005. It will reopen in early 2008.
It then will open to the public on certain days during the year and by special arrangement for groups.
Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The buidling was first used as a palace for a few days in 1768, when Prince William V, stadholder of the Netherlands, and his wife, Wilhelmina of Prussia, were given a ceremonial welcome in Amsterdam. When King Louis Bonaparte, Emperor Napoleon’s brother came to Amsterdam in 1808, he had the 17th century city hall turned into a royal palace.
The large collection of Empire style furniture, various tapestries, chandeliers and clocks date from this period.
During the summer, you can visit the Citizens' Hall, the Burgomasters' Chambers, and the Council Room, as well as the Vierschaar, the marble Tribunal in which death sentences were pronounced during the 17th century.
The Royal Palace in Amsterdam is now used mainly for entertaining and official functions. Every year, it provides the setting for the presentation of the Erasmus Prize, the Silver Carnation, the Royal Awards for Painting and the Prince Claus Award.
The foundation that manages the palace opens it to the public when it is not in use by the Royal House. Every summer, an exhibition highlights one historical or artistic feature of the building. And, following the annual presentation of the Royal Awards for Painting in October, the prize-winning works of art are put on public display.
