The Canning Museum is located in the premises of the former canning factory in Øvre Strandgate 88, which is a part of the city known as 'Gamle Stavanger' (Old Stavanger). In this authentic factory environment, the production of canned brisling and fish balls can still be seen.

From the 1890s to approximately 1960, the canning industry was Stavanger's most significant trade. The exhibition provides insight into the environment and the working conditions of the canning factories. The complete process, from the arrival of the fresh fish until the cans leave the factory, can be seen in detail. The machinery is still in good technical condition, and on every first Sunday of the month, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer season, the smoking ovens are lit. On these days visitors can taste freshly smoked brisling right from the oven.

Stavanger Maritime Museum is a division of Stavanger Museum. The Maritime Museum specializes in the maritime history of the southwestern part of Norway. The museum has extensive collections of artifacts, archives, photographs, and other documentation from shipping, shipbuilding, and coastal culture. The Maritime Museum owns and operates two sailing ships that are actively used to illustrate our cultural maritime heritage: the sloop Anna af Sand that was built in 1848, and the Colin Archer yacht Wyvern from 1897.

Stavanger Maritime Museum is the administrative body for the Cultural Heritage Act. This means that the institution is responsible for the protection of all cultural monuments and material in the sea within the boundaries of the Rogaland county.

Stavanger Maritime Museum is an active member of several international professional networks, including the Association of North Sea Cities that arranges maritime history conferences within the North Sea region. The Maritime Museum is a worldwide maritime museum organization represented on the Board of the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM).

Stavanger Maritime Museum has two sailing ships, both are in use.

The sloop Anna af Sand is a typical representative of the many freight vessels that sailed the fjords and coast from the eighteenth century to the present. The Colin Archer yacht Wyvern is an excellent example of Norwegian yachting traditions.

The Norwegian Emigration Center was established in 1986 to promote increased contact between Norwegians and friends of Norway around the world. The Center is part of an international network of research and genealogy centers and can therefore offer a range of activities to all people of Norwegian descent interested in emigration history and genealogy.

The Norwegian Emigration Center is located in one of Stavanger´s oldest wharfhouses, close to the place where the sloop "Restauration" set sail for New York on July 4th 1825. On this historic ground we are building a bridge between the past and the present.

The mansion Breidablikk was built by the architect, Henrik Nissen, in 1881. The owner was the merchant and ship owner Lars Berentsen, one of the leading businessmen in Stavanger at that time.
Breidablikk is uncommonly well preserved, both the interior and exterior, and offers the public a vivid insight into the lifestyle of the middle class in Norway at the end of the 1800s.

The house was built in the Swiss style with touches of romantic and gothic influences. The interiors are amongst the richest and best preserved examples we have of the historic style, including furniture in the gothic, rococo, baroque and other contemporary styles. The buildings and the interiors demonstrate high quality workmanship.

In addition to the main building, the old main house and barn from 1852 still stand. The barn contains an exhibition of farming equipment and horse-drawn vehicles. The park is in the English style, containing curved paths and exotic trees, which are also well preserved.

The royal manor, Ledaal, was built as a summer residence for the Kielland family in 1799-1803. The owner was the merchant and court agent, Gabriel Scanche Kielland, the great-grandfather of the author Alexander Kielland.
The author himself has never lived at Ledaal, but was often among the guests at the wonderful parties that took place here. In Kielland’s novels one can recognize characteristics from life at the royal manor, the building and of the family members and others connected to Ledaal.

The site with its buildings and park is a national trust. The main building gives a good idea of contemporary styles and tastes, and of the social life of the upper class during the first half of the 1800s. The interior is richly furnished with furniture and other inventory in the rococo, Louis XVI, empire and Biedermier styles.

In addition to being a museum, Ledaal also functions as a royal residence and venue for official functions.

Stavanger Museum’s main building was built as a museum in 1893. The architect was Hartvig Sverdrup Eckoff. The building was designed in the contemporary, richly decorated new renaissance style. It was constructed in polished bricks with wooden beams in the story dividers, and consisted mainly of an entrance and a north wing. Above the entrance there was a great dome.

In 1930 a south wing was added at the same time as the dome was removed and the facade altered in accordance with the 1930’s classicism. Stavanger municipality’s Chief Architect, Erling Nilsen, was responsible for the renovations.

The third, and so far the last, building phase was completed in 1964. This phase included an administration wing with a library and an auditorium towards the south and an office wing towards the west. The additions were designed by the architect company Retzius and Bjoland.
