The agricultural history of Kronoberg County is placed in perspective in its own museum. Kronoberg agricultural museum opened its doors in 1972 after far-ranging efforts to document the world of local farmers. Officially a department of Smålands museum, the Kronoberg agricultural museum(swedish) is situated just north of Alvesta.
Visit the museum on a summer's day and drink in the atmosphere of the old Hjärtenholm farm, whose buildings now house the museum. It documents the changing conditions under which farmers worked, from the days of hand and animal-powered implements to the early machine era. Experience the hard life of the subsistence farmer, with sowing and harvests, butchering and baking.

The lovely surrounding countryside is still tended by modern farmers, who work the land and keep the countryside open. At the spacious cottage café, you can sample prepared food or relax with your own bag lunch.

The cultural reserve covers 42 hectares with a farm environment, infields and outlying land bordering on Lake Såganässjön. Marked paths are provided for visitors to follow throughout the reserve. The brochure "Kulturstigarna i Råshult", on sale locally, contains more information about what to see while walking around the reserve.

The name Råshult comes from rås, which means a strip of marsh or a valley, and the suffix hult, which means a small wood or clump of trees. Place names ending in –hult are often from the medieval period.

What you can and cannot do as a visitor

Visitors can walk freely along the paths and experience what an 18th century landscape looks like, and how it functions and develops.
You must keep off seeded arable land, however, and you must not walk on unmown meadows, dig up or pick any plants and fungi, trap or catch insects and other animals, light fires, pitch tents or park a caravan or motorhome.

We have been working methodically for the past decade to recreate the 18th century landscape at Råshult, and we expect to complete the task in about 2010. The managers, Lena and Michael Michaelsson, are responsible for maintaining the reserve and for the work involved in recreating the landscape, based on maintenance plans drawn up in consultation between the County Administrative Board, the managers and the Stiftelsen Linnés Råshult foundation, which owns the land.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Welcome to Smålands museum, Sweden's oldest provincial museum,
with collections dating from 1792. Its oldest building dates from 1885 and was designed by the leading Swedish architect of the era, F. W. Scholander, on the initiative of Växjö county governor Gunnar Wennerberg.
Smålands museum reopened in 1996 as Sweden's museum of glass following extensive expansion and renovations. Småland's cultural heritage and the history
of Kronoberg County are profoundly informed by the work done and the lives lived on its rural industrial estates, which are now primarily devoted to the production
of glass. The museum has nationwide responsibility for collecting, documenting
and exhibiting Swedish glass and its production.

The glass collection is the source of the museum's international reputation. In addition to glass of all types, the museum's collections includes objects of cultural historical significance, visual art, textiles, church furnishings, archaeological finds and agricultural history. The separate numismatic collection (swedish) is the museum's oldest. The permanent exhibits center on two themes, Småland's rural industrial landscape and five centuries of Swedish glass.
Temporary exhibitions (swedish) are mounted on design, glass, visual art
and cultural history.

Smålands museum is the only provincial museum in Sweden that operates its own ship. Casting off from its home port adjacent to the castle ruins of Kronoberg, the steamer Thor, built in 1887 and still in active service, plies the waters of Lake Helgasjön during the summer months. Sweden's southernmost lock, at Åby, was completed the same year the Thor was built. The lock is still in use, and a trip through it on the Thor is a memory for life. The steamer Thor(swedish) is a must for lovers of steam power. Charters and scheduled passenger tours are available.
