The Museum of World Culture and its Mission
Financed by the Swedish Government, we are under the auspices of the National Museums of World Culture. That agency is one link in a nationwide initiative aimed at adapting the collections of historical and ethnographic museums to the globalisation process, as well as to accelerating intercontinental migration and multicultural societie
The Concept of World Culture
The museum interprets the concept of world culture in a dynamic and open-ended manner. On the one hand, various cultures are incorporating impulses from each other and becoming more alike. On the other hand, local, national, ethnic and gender differences are shaping much of that process. World culture is not only about communication, reciprocity, and interdependence, but the specificity, concretion and uniqueness of each and every individual.
From a Regional Focus to a Global Community
Museums have often viewed various cultures through the prism of geographical and regional influences. These days, they are also looking at the global community that arises from affinities of age, education and gender - common values, diseases that cross national borders, urban civilization, fashion and sports.
The Museum of World Culture - Mission Statement
"In dialogue with others, the Museum of World Culture is a forum for emotional and intellectual encounters that help people feel at home wherever they are, trust each other and accept joint responsibility for the planets constantly changing future."
An Arena for Discourse and Reflection
The museum acts as an intermediary, accumulates knowledge and preserves cultural objects. It is an arena for discourse and reflection in which a multitude of voices are heard, contentious issues are thrashed out, and people of all backgrounds feel at ease.

The architects responsible for the exterior and interior of the museum are Cécile Brisac from France and Edgar Gonzalez, an American citizen born in Cuba. The Brisac Gonzalez architecture firm, founded in 1996, is located in London.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
"The Göteborg Museum of Art at Götaplatsen, Gothenburg, is renowned for its collection of Nordic art from around the close of the 19th century. A must see is the lavisciously decorated Fürstenberg Gallery, named after a leading Gothenburg art donor, Pontus Fürstenberg and his wife Göthilda. Among the artists showcased one can mention Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, and P.S. Kröyer.
The museum also houses older and contemporary art, both Nordic and international. The Museum has been awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide (Green Guide Scandinavia).
The museum building was created for the international exhibition in Gothenburg 1923 by architect Sigfrid Ericson, celebrating the city`s 300th anniversary, and represents the monumental Neo-Classical style in Nordic architecture. It is built of a yellow brick called ”Gothenburg brick” because of the materials frequent use in the city. The museums forms the imposing end of the main street of the city, Kungsportsavenyn." Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Göteborg Botanical Garden differs in many respects from most traditional botanical gardens on the European continent. It was conceived and planned by the municipality of Göteborg in the 1910`s as a botanical garden with an extra emphasis on horticulture, and with a broad scope in the Swedish community life. It remains a public garden to this day. For a long time our garden was administered by the city of Gothenburg, but nowadays it is part of the larger Västra Götaland Region.

The area in total is 175 hectares (ca 430 acres), of which most constitutes a nature reserve including our arboretum. The garden proper is about 40 hectars and we are growing something like 16,000 different species in various parts of it. Our Rock Garden is (to put it mildly) famous and has received three stars in Guide Michelin. Other fascinating parts of the garden are The Rhododendron Valley and The Japanese Glade, just to mention a few.
Our Greenhouses should be pointed out too. There you will find about 4,000 various plants, including some 1,500 orchids, a remarkable travertine department and the rare Eastern Island Tree.

The most beautiful garden of all in Sweden
No, we are not bragging. In 2003 our garden was awarded as just that! And this in the very first year that the contest was arranged in Sweden. Furthermore, in a contest 2006, "The most beautiful garden in Europe", we placed an honourable 3rd. You are welcome to come and investigate yourself, in real or virtual reality, what you think about that.
