"Vallby Open Air museum was founded in 1921 to present a picture of life in Västmanland county. Today, the museum features a number of exhibits that represent the county through time, such as an eigtheenth century farmstead, a soldier's cottage, an "old town" with buildings relocated from the cities of Västerås and Arboga, the grand residence of a copperworks owner, an ironmaster's farmstead, a sawmill and an early twentieth century free church, village school, and open-air theater.

Vallby museum strives to recreate and show historical environments as completely an authentically as possible. At the farmstead, for example, visitors can see how people lived, what certain animals was kept, and what was cultivated in gardens and fields.

Vallby museum's animals and plants are a part of the museum's effort to preserve Sweden's biological heritage - a kind of live exhibit that includes rural animal breeds, as well as endangered plant species, such as older grain types, rare decorative plants, and certain fruit tree species. Information about vintage architecture and period decorating is also available." (Discover Västmanland)

The History of Tidö Castle

Tidö Castle is probably the best preserved and most living castle in Sweden from the glorious period when Sweden was a great power. Axel Oxenstierna- Gustaf II Adolfs chancellor and also Queen Kristinas guardian built the castle from 1620 to 1642 with a help from the talented Simon de la Vallée and Nicodemus Tessin senior. The castle is built in a tight dutch renaissance style where the tone elements are the beautiful sandstone portals. In 200 years of time Tido inherited within the Oxenstierna family and where sold first time 1840. The following halfcentury implyed for the castle a strong period of decline when their owners where changing not less then six times until it was bought up by lord of the manor Carl-David von Schinkel.

"Legendary Engsö, mentioned as early as 1185, is among the most interesting of Sweden´s many castles and manor houses. A fortified stone building was built in the 1480´s and extended and embellished in the 1630´s. The manor house acquired its current appearance and interior in the 1740´s, when the architect Carl Hårleman created an elegant dwelling for Count Carl Fredrik Piper. The manor house, which acquired its current appearance and interior in the 1740´s was inhabitated until 1959.

Today, Engsö is a living museum, with its beautiful interiors from different centuries open to visitors. The interior has been left largely untouched, whilst works of art and the contents reflect different eras. There is a large collection of paintings, and the famous "Engsökedjan" gold chain." Down by the water in the inner harbour of Köping you find some hundred meters of 1093 mm (3'7") narrow gauge railway and a tan engine shed. Inside the engine shed you find the only remaining steam engine of the Köping-Uttersberg-Riddarhyttans Järnväg (KURJ railway), KUJ 7 Patric Reuterswärd built 1894, together with a couple of 130+ years old passenger coaches and other unique vehicles. There's also railbikes if you feel like taking a short tour.

In the creamcoloured house with green window-frames, built 1866 and the oldest station building in Köping, you find our exhibition of smaller objects and pictures from the KURJ railway." (Discover Västmanland)

"Housed in Köping's old brewery, which was built as a crown brewery in the 18th century. The basic exhibitions reflects Köping's history during 10,000 years. Datenbank Verlag Dr. C. Müller-Straten Miunich 2009
The pharmacy museum is called "Scheeles minne" - in honour of the world-famous apothecary Scheele, the creator of modern-day chemistry. Someone once said that a genius "discovers what is under our noses". This is uncommonly true of Scheele, who discovered among other things, both oxygen and hydrogen. The pharmacy section of Scheeles Minne is housed in Köpings Museum. The fire fighters' museum, Köpings Brandmuseum, is situated in Köpings Museum's yard. " (Discover Västmanland)

Sala Silvermine is one of the world’s best preserved mine settings. Here the visitor encounters dark winding galleries, vast caverns and magic lakes. Our experienced guides tell you of a fantastic chapter in industrial history, and the mine area has also been developed into a venue for events, adventures, parties, weddings and conferences. Our beautiful Bed & Breakfast, “Gruvfrun” has 20s and 50s decor and each room has its individual character. For the slightly more adventurous, we have a mine suite 155 metres underground.

Down the years, the mine has been given names like “Sweden’s treasure chest” and “The Foremost Gem of the Realm”. This is perhaps not so surprising, since in its heyday, production amounted to more than 3 tons of silver a year, and a total of more than 400 tons of silver and about 40,000 tons of lead. Most of the silver was used in manufacturing coins, but artefacts were also made. Even to those not familiar with mining, the underground setting is sensational. It is cold, damp and dark, but very beautiful. The impression is made even more powerful knowing that extraction was done completely by hand. Continuous operations ceased in the early 20th century, but to this day Sala Silvermine is one of Sweden’s greatest treasure stores – one of culture and experiences.
