Contemporary art and visual culture attract 75 000 visitors annually to Bildmuseet, the museum of Umeå University. Exhibitions of Swedish and international art, photojournalism, design, architecture and scientific imagery combine present-day perspectives with historical investigations.

Ethics and aesthetics, art and society, the global and the local, creativity and human living conditions are central to Bildmuseet’s program.

The majority of our exhibitions are self-generated; most often they continue on national and international tours. Seven galleries comprising 1200 square-meters of exhibition space assure variety and plenitude. Bildmuseet is located at the Gammlia museum area, just outside the city centre.

A broad range of activities such as lectures, artist talks, panel discussions, seminars, film screenings as well as concerts and dance performances complement the exhibition program. The museum shop offers artbooks, posters, magazines, postcards and other visual souvenirs.

This is a museum that will tell you about the settlers' strenuous life in a bare country with no roads - about need, hunger and sorrow, but also about happiness and contentment. You will be able to see old buildings from the 17th 18th and 19th centuries and great number of items (altogether around 18 000!) from the peasants' culture as well as from the Sami culture. The museum happens to be situated on the site of a Sami cot at an ancient cold spring. There are also some objects from the Orient among the collections.

We hope that you’re walking- tour through the history will be an interesting and exciting experience. The museum is located 15km from Vännäs and 45 km from Umeå in Västerbotten Sweden.

Forestry through times, where different technical progressions, tools, living, food and clothing together form an image of the historical development.
The exhibitions also tell us about the forest itself, what the wood was used for then and now.

The Machine Era

The Mechanized Logging Era, with its 1500m2, offers many unique and exciting experiences. Here you can test your skills in a forwarder, or why not have a seat in our mini-cinema and watch journal movies about the forest!

The Manual Era

The Manual Logging Era offers plenty of interesting information. Anything from how the workers transported the wood from the forest - f.e with a horse and sleigh as seen here on the image - to how they were living in the huts.

Birger Nordins famous collection with art, items and books can now be found at the Museum of Forestry.
The collection is owned by Sparbankstiftelsen Norrland. The items are newly arrived and being worked on. A themed exhibition is now available at the museum.
The collection. At the museum there are large collections of older items, of which many have connections to the forestry of Norrland. Cataloguing in progress. Contact the museum for more information.
Birger Perssons beetle collection. There are also beetle collections at the museum. These are now catalogued with contributions from the Swedish species project. The largest is Birger Perssons beetle collection.
The library. Literature mainly about forestry in Norrland. Contact the museum for more information.
