The Zoological Garden of Brno City (Brno Zoo) was founded in 1950 and it was opened to the public on 30th of August 1953. It is a contributory organization of The Statutory City of Brno - the second largest city of Czech Republic. The zoo is situated in attractive area of 65 hectares of "Mniší hora" (Monk Hill) forested slopes. In the city centre you can found The Permanent Aquarium Exhibition of freshwater and marine fauna, which also belongs to the Brno Zoo.
The Brno Zoo is a member of important international organizations as The Union of Czech and Slovak Zoos (UCSZ), The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), The Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA), The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), The International Zoo Educators Association (IZE) and other. In the zoo is also the CITES Centre for animals from illegal international trade and the rescue station for injured and disabled wild animals.
Thanks to an expert knowledge and breeding successes the Brno Zoo can cooperate on realization of prestigious breeding programs for worldwide most endangered animals. Zoo is also participated in conservation of endangered animal species in the Czech Republic and cooperates with professional scientific institutions.
Very important is for the Brno Zoo a conservation education – staff of Promotional and Educational Department is in cooperation with zoologists and breeders preparing various educational programs and excursions for schools and other concerned persons. Also many activities for ill and disabled children take place in the zoo.
The Brno Zoo produce promotional materials and the quarterly Zooreport journal, carry on own web pages, organize various actions for public and participate in tourist trade fairs.
The zoo is opened daily all year and the visit rate is about 230 000 visitors per year.

The early baroque Dietrichstein Palace was originally erected as a representative residence for František, Cardinal Dietrchstein, the bishop of Olomouc between 1614 and 1619. The building was designed by an Italian architect Giovanni Giacomo Tencallo, later reconstructed by another Italian Domenico Martinelli (1700). The palace is recognised as one of the most typical examples of baroque style in Brno. After the recent reconstruction in 1980s the palace became the most attended exhibition facility of Moravian Museum. It offers You an exciting tour through the centuries.

Today, the museum collections include several million objects, representing valuable scientific material from the fields of literature, music and theatre, geology, mineralogy, botany, zoology and entomology. Within the museum work 15 specialised and several service departments. The museum is headed by its director, Mr. Petr Suler (PhD).
The Moravian Museum has developed a rich tradition in scientific, documentation and education work. The results of scientific research are published in scientific journals, monographs, exhibition catalogues and other publications. Every year, numerous temporary exhibitions, lectures. concerts and other educational programmes are taking place in all museum buildings.
The Children's Museum, special education and leisure facility, is dedicated to the youngest generation of museum visitors. Interesting cultural and educational events and exhibitions are prepared in co-operation with particular departments.
The Moravian Museum, second-ranking museum institution by its size in the Czech Republic, was founded as soon as in July 1817 by a decree of Emperor Francis I., by the cradle stood such men as Christian Karl Andre (Moravian economist, enlightener, agriculture specialist, journalist, secretary of the Moravian-Silesian Society for Agriculture Development, Natural Sciences and Local History), Count Josef Auersperg (1767-1829, lawyer, graduate from Charles’ University in Prague, enlightener, important representative of the Moravian intelligence, the Moravian-Silesian Society for Development of Agriculture, Natural Sciences and Local History supporter), Antonin Bedrich Mitrovsky (1770-1842, lawyer, graduate from Theresian Knight’s Academy in Vienna, state officer, governor of Moravia 1815-1827 supported the efforts to found a museum in Brno, thanks to him the museum acquired its first building, the so called Bishop’s Courtyard in Brno), Count Hugo-Frantisek Salm-Reifferscheidt (1776-1836, enlightener, entrepreneur in mining, metallurgy, and in agriculture, director of the Moravian Society for Agriculture Development, Natural Sciences and Local History, gifted the museum with collections of nature history and art).
