The David Collection was founded by Christian Ludvig David (1878-1960), a barrister of the Danish High Court.
The works of fine and applied art from the 18th century, which make up the nucleus of the collection, were acquired by the founder himself. In addition, he assembled a small group of works of art from the Islamic world and a collection of Danish art from the first half of the 20th century (the latter is currently on extended loan to other institutions).
On December 12th 1945, the collection and the building, which houses it, became the independent institution, the C. L. David Foundation and Collection. The actual opening was not until 1948, partly because David did not vacate the second floor until 1946, partly because the architect Ole Wanscher had to furnish a silver room on the same floor. In 1960, on the death of the founder, the Foundation became the sole heir to his fortune.
Since 1960, the exhibition space of the museum has increased significantly. The collections have continued to expand, particularly that of Islamic art.

From the Kings Kunstkammer to a Public Museum

The museum collects, registers, maintains, researches in and handles Danish and foreign art dating from the 14th Century till the present day, mostly with their origins in western culture circles. As far as the Danish art is concerned the museum must invest in and maintain representative collections.

The museum's collections constitute almost 9,000 paintings and sculptures, more than 240.000 works of art on paper as well as more than 2,600 plaster casts of figures from ancient times, the middle-ages and the Renaissance. The major part of the museum's older collections comes from the art chambers of Danish kings.

The museum's collections are presented in both new and old surroundings. In November 1998 Statens Museum for Kunst re-opened after completing rebuilding and renovation. The old and new buildings are connected by one large-scale amalgamation between past and present. Facing the front is the old building and from Østre Anlæg is a new and modern building - seen from the side is a glass-covered street that connects the old and new buildings.

The older pieces of art of foreign and Danish origin are presented in the 103 years old building which was designed by architect Jens Vilhelm Dahlerup. This selection includes works by Bloemart, Jordaens, Gijsbrechts, Abildgaard, Jens Juel and L.A. Ring, among others. In the new extension, designed by architect Anna Maria Indrio the newer pieces and completely modern art are arranged, showing works by Danish and Foreign artists such as Matisse, Braque, Weie, Kirkeby, Smithson.

Special opening hours
The Museum is open all Easter including Easter Monday. In connection with the autumn holidays of Danish schools (week 42 - including two Sundays), the opening hours are extended from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Museum is closed on January 1, December 24, 25, 26 and 31.

The Geological Museum is part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark. The exhibitions at the museum cover the Solar system, the evolution of life on Earth, volcanoes, minerals, and the geological evolution of Denmark and Greenland.

The collections at the Geological Museum have been built up through centuries and include large collections of minerals, fossils, petrology, and meteorites.

The museum organizes guided tours for school classes and runs series of popular talks for the general public (in Danish). If you have found a strange rock you are always welcome to bring it in for a good explanation.

The Geological Museum is also part of the University of Copenhagen and the scientific staff is active in research, teaching and public outreach of Geology.

History of the Geological Museum

The Geological Museum opened in 1772 as the "Universitetets Nye Naturaltheater" (The New Natural Theatre of the University) and contains specimens which have been in museum collections for more than 300 years. When it was first formed it was the only geological institution in Denmark and it has been the parent body for the Geological Surveys of Denmark (1888) and Greenland (1946) and the four geological teaching institutes (1967), which were later joined to form the Geological Institute, University of Copenhagen (1991).

Today the Geological Museum acts as a centre for Danish geology with special national responsibilities for keeping public records. The duties and functions as outlined in the University statutes for natural history museums include:

– To maintain and enlarge the scientific collections;
– To ensure that the collections are used for scientific research;

To present the science of geology to the general public and to foster an interest in natural history by maintaining public exhibitions;
– To carry out scientific research, in particular on material in the Museum collections;
– To supervise Cand.scient. and Ph.D. students and scholarship holders.

The Museum consists of six major collections representing the branches of geology, a library (which also serves the Geological Institute, The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and the Danish Lithosphere Centre) and an archive. The collections contain approximately 8 million specimens, which have been accumulated through the years from over 30 large collections, including royal, public and private collections together with material collected by the staff or obtained by donation, purchase or exchange. The collections are divided into two main categories: 1) Original collections of fossils, minerals, meteorites and rocks, which have formed the basis for scientific research papers published by all the geological institutes in Denmark, 2) Reference collections, which are designed to document the composition and development of different regions of the Earth (especially Denmark, the Faeroe Islands and Greenland) and to illustrate the development of flora and fauna through time. One specific public obligation of the museum is to curate geological material which has been designated by the National Board of Museums as "Danekræ", a new concept concerning finds in Denmark of natural history objects of unique scientific or exhibitive value.

The museum`s research is mainly carried out in the fields of mineralogy, igneous petrology, evolution of the Precambrian crust, vertebrate and invertebrate palaeontology and Quaternary geology.

The exhibition of minerals is one of the finest in Europe with exceptional specimens from the Faeroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. Other permanent exhibitions tell about meteorites, volcanoes, continental drift, the geology of Denmark, the geology of Greenland, fossils (including the largest bivalve in the World), and the origin of Man.

Simultaneously temporary exhibitions on topics of current interest are shown, the latest being on Fossil Birds. The number of visitors per annum is about 25,000.

Since 1916 the museum has arranged popular lectures for the public. A special section in the museum provides public schools and high schools with study collections and educational material.

The Victorian Home

Guided tours in English Saturdays and Sundays at 12.00 and 13.00 in July and August. The tours depart from the museum foyer. Please sign up about an hour prior to tour start at the information desk in the entrance hall of the National Museum. This is also pick up point.

A large residence, fully equipped in 1890 in the late-Victorian style. A complete home such as this, consisting of living-rooms, dining-room, bedrooms, kitchen with pantry and larder, servants’ quarters – and even a bathroom is an extremely rare occurrence. The knick-knacks, the photographs and several paintings still exist, and, what is rather unique, all of the textiles are original which includes upholstery and the lavishly draped curtains and portieres with bobbles and passementerie. Every piece of furniture is still arranged in the same way in the rooms, for which it was acquired.
