Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Art Museum's old red brick section, by the architect Birger Federley, represents Industrial architecture of the early 1900's. The building has been part of a larger real estate of the leather factory ''Veljekset Åström Oy''. The Oulu City carried a renovation project during the years 1988-1990, and the outcome is an architectural Post-Modern creation which unites the old, massive, industrial edifice with a new, light section created by the architectural company ''Jorma Teppo Ky'' from Oulu.
The collections comprise mainly 20th-century art works of artists from northern Finland, contemporary Finnish art, the Naivist Collection of the Heinänen Art Foundation and some other donations. The museum organizes changing exhibitions on Finnish and international art.
The total area of the museum is 3400 square meters, of which the exhibition areas are slightly over 1200 square meters.

The island of Turkansaari, situated in the Oulu-river about 14 km east of Oulu is an old trading center and place of salmon fishing. The history of the open-air museum started in 1922 when the old church from 1694 was restored to its original site. Today in the museum area there is a typical farmyard complex with all the appropriate buildings and equipments of the region. Old forms of livelihood such as tar-making, salmon fishing, lumbering and log floating can be experienced.

A detailed picture of the Finnish bedrock is given by the regional rock collection which is perhaps of greatest scientific importance among the museum collections. A small paleontological collection provides an introduction to the development of life on Earth while Quartenrnary geology is presented by sediment samples. Sedimentary structures are one speciality of the museum.

The Kierikki Stone Age Centre and Hotel Kierikki are open as needed upon request beyond regular opening hours.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
During excavations in the early 1990s, significant findings were made: foundations for dwellings and various objects. It became understood that the Kierikki area has been an important settlement for nearly 2,000 years, roughly between 5,000 and 3,000 B.C., over 7,000 years ago. Kierikki's oldest settlements are in the Pahkakoski area, where settlers had migrated from the east along the river Iijoki in about 5,000 B.C. Kierikki was being inhabited year-round, at the latest, by roughly 4,000 B.C.
Kierikki Stone Age Centre introduces Finnish culture and tales about Finnish Stone Age life to all who are interested in prehistory.
The permanent display at the centre displays objects from archaeological findings and presents research history. In the nearby Stone Age village, you can see how settlements were established in the Stone Age and what Stone Age life was like. At the prehistoric fishing camp, you can learn about prehistoric fishing methods.
