The Independence Museum was founded on January 30th, 1990, as the Museum of Polish Independence and Social Movements, as a result of the transformation of the Museum of the History of the Polish Revolutionary Movements. The new main seat was established by the Ministry of Culture and Art in the Przebendowski/Radziwi³³ Palace, where the Lenin's Museum used to be located (1955-1989). Warehouses of the collections, historical departments, and the library were located in the building next to the Ujazdowski Castle. The pavilion was taken away from the Independence Museum by the Ministry of Culture and Art and transferred as the seat of the Historical Monuments' Documentation Center (in 1991 and 1993). The Independence Museum has two martyrological branches as well: the Museum of the 10th Pavilion of Warsaw Citadel and the Museum of Pawiak Prison. The institution got its new name, valid until now, in 1991. In 1992, the Independence Museum obtained the status of the National Institution of Culture. It organized ca. 160 exhibitions visited by over 750 thousand guests in the years 1990-2000. The Independence Museum has been conducting a versatile, intensive educational activity since the very beginning (lessons in the Museum, competitions, film projections, theatrical plays, music events), popularizing activities (meetings with authors, promotions of books, cycles of meetings: "Towards the Independence" and "Be a Pole"), as well as publishing activities. Seven exhibitions were awarded or obtained distinctions in annual competitions "Museum Event of the Year". The Museum has been a self-governmental cultural institution since January 1st, 1999 and the Board of the Mazovian Province is its organizer. Since 1994, the institution has been publishing its own magazine: a museum and historical magazine entitled "Independence and Memory". It has summed up its activities so far in the book entitled "The 10th Anniversary of the Independence Museum. Memory Book 1990-2000."
