Origins and Development:
In the XVIII century, under the initiative of Marquês de Pombal, the university system was restructured in order to reform existing universities and institutionalise new universities. The outcome of the reform was the creation of new institutions dedicated to the study of natural sciences such as ; the Museum of Natural History, the Chemistry Laboratory, the Physics Cabinet, and the Botanical Gardens. These changes allowed the University of Coimbra to establish itself as a major European university.

The division of the Natural History Museum into four sections was made official by Royal Decree on the 2nd of July 1885, the Mineralogical and Geological Museum was inaugurated as one of the four sections.

In accordance with the Regulations of the Coimbra University of Sciences, the Natural History Museum was recreated in 1991 and with it the Mineralogical and Geological Museum section.

Today, the Mineralogical and Geological Museum is located on the first floor of the College of Jesus Building, next to the Zoological Museum. This area is dedicated to the Museum’s exhibits and was designated as such in the first quarter of the XXth century by Prof. Anselmo Ferraz de Carvalho:

- the José Bonifácio d’Andrada e Silva Gallery – a collection of minerals displayed according to the Strunz et Dana classification sysem and based on chemical and structural criteria;

- the Paul Choffat Room–devoted to Paleontology. This room currenty hosts an exhibit of Trilobites found in the Canelas-Arouca Region;

- the Carlos Ribeiro Room - dedicated to the particularities of Portugese Geology as well as the uses of liticos materials in common products.
