"The L A Mayer Memorial Institute and Museum for Islamic Art was founded by Mrs Vera Bryce-Solomons of London to perpetuate the memory of Islamic scholar Leon Arye Mayer and to help the general public appreciate and understand the artistic and aesthetic achievements of Islam. The museum’s collection of some 5,000 items illustrates art in Muslim countries throughout the ages. Spanning a display area of about 800 square metres, the collection includes items from Turkey, India, Egypt, Syria and Iraq, with a special display devoted to the 7th-century origins of Persian (Iranian) Islamic art. A comprehensive exhibition of Turkish silhouettes includes outstanding examples of a now obsolete art form, and Islamic rugs and textiles are also featured. The clock room houses an exquisite collection of antique clocks, music boxes and other mechanical contraptions. The museum occasionally holds exhibitions on non-Islamic themes. Its well-stocked archive and research library on Islamic art and archaeology also features a unique photograph and slide collection." (Israel Arts Directory)
