Permanent collection / display: the Novigrad Lapidarium Museum’s Stone Collection surrounded by a park.

The Novigrad Lapidarium Museum’s Stone Collection are cultural goods of national importance. It’s consists of 101 pieces, comprises architectural elements and to large degree liturgical inventory originating from between 1st and the 18th century. The most significant holdings of the Lapidarium belong to the collection from the Early Middle Ages, including the well preserved Mauritius Ciborium from the end oh the 8th century, a rare example of Early Carolingian art in the region.

Year of foundation: 2006.
The Museum has occasional exhibitions.

"The museum was built according to a project by the Randić-Turato architectural office. It was envisaged as an interpolation of a new building called Two Black Boxes and a Park into the old historical town centre. It was opened in late 2006.

The museum's permanent collection comprises architectural monuments (thresholds, lintels, transennae, crests and other artefacts) and elements of church furnishings (altar slabs, ciborium parts, pilasters and capitals) from the 1st to the 18th centuries AD.

A group of early medieval monuments, architectural ornaments, and church furnishings from a nearby cathedral form the very core and the most important part of the collection of stone monuments. The remains of the ciborium of Bishop Maurice (8th century AD) from the cathedral’s former baptistery hold a particular place among the exhibited items. The ciborium’s remains are displayed in such a way as to recreate their original position in the baptistery area. Four plutei from the baptistery represent rare, perhaps unique, examples of such craftsmanship in Europe.

The great importance of the collection was demonstrated in the exhibition entitled The Croats and the Carolings, which displayed the most representative stone monuments from Novigrad – the ciborium and the plutei. The exhibition was held in Split in 2000 as a part of the international project Charles the Great – The Making of Europe.

Apart from the items of the permanent exhibition, which are part of the Lapidarium Collection, the museum also houses the Cultural and Historical Collection and the Rigo Gallery Collection." (Text and pictures: MDC)

The museum is situated in the historic town of Umag, in the mediaeval tower (14th - 15th c.) that served as a fortress in the fortification system defending the city from naval attacks.

Archaeological research of the tower and the reconstruction of the building began late in 2010; as such, the museum is closed to visitors until further notice. Temporary exhibitions are occasionally organized in other facilities in the town.

The archaeological collection is the largest of the collections because of the intensive archaeological investigations conducted by the museum on land and offshore Savudrija and Umag. Artefacts from Antiquity are predominant, the most attractive being ceramic lids for oil lamps in the form of gladiator helmets, a glass pitcher with a sanded decoration in the form of a honeycomb, a Carnelian gem with an image of Rea Silvia, and a set of gold jewellery. The period of the Modern Age is represented by items of painted table pottery (16th – 17th c.) from the workshop in Sv. Ivan Kornetski.

The collection of stone monuments comprises Antique epigraphic funerary monuments and modern-age coats of arms of the Venetian mayors and famous aristocratic families from Umag.

The collection of photographs holds photos from the life of writer Fulvio Tomizza, photos of the city of Umag and its surrounding area, and the photos of the inhabitants of Umag throughout history. The museum has a collection of postcards as well.

The holdings of the art collection comprise works by contemporary artists from Umag and the works of the Grožnjan Art Circle, whose members are artists living and working in Grožnjan.

The museum has organized and designed a cultural tourism project Sepomaia Viva – International Festival of Antiquity, combining historical and archaeological research, shows, education, exhibitions, and performances, and has thus enriched the tourist offer of Umag. The event is held annually and lasts three days during the first weekend in August." (MDC)
