Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Collection of the Crimean Republican Museum of Regional Studies (CRMRS) is one of the most complete in Crimea and is of interest not only for Crimean citizens but for all the world. Its history goes back to the Museum of antiquities of Tavrichesky Scientific Archive Commission (TSAC) and Museum of Natural sciences of Tavrichesky region.

Museum of antiquities (founded in 1887) was created due to the initiative of TSAC with the purpose of studying archive affaires and selection of the most important historical documents for an endless storage. But very soon its activities exceed the limits of prescribed work that is why foundation of the historical museum was quite natural.

Museum was completed mainly by donations from “unselfish amateurs of antiquities”; partly by archeological finds from Kerch, Chersonesos and very slightly by purchases. To 1914 it was quite large collection, numbered more than 5000 exhibits, among them there were many rare things, such as: adornments and household items from Naples Scythes; antique ceramics and glass; golden, silver and bronze coins of different epochs; labels of Turks sultans and Crimean Khans; rare manuscripts, drawings, maps, photos, ethnographic materials; stone sculptured figures and steles

From December 1899 one more independent museum have functioned in Simferopol – Museum of Historic and Natural Sciences, which exposition was situated in a building of city council, as it was mentioned in popular Russia guide of G. Moscowich: «nature of Crimea, its flora, fauna and geology are presented widely in the museum; there are every possible kinds of birds, animals, snakes, fossilized, insects and plants». Funds of the museum were enriched mainly by finds from expeditions and donations. Unique paleontology finds were restored there: fossil fish and ancient mollusks, fossil animals lived in Crimea (mammoth, mastodon, fossil bison, lion). Brilliant collections of Crimean minerals, skulls of animals and birds (including rare and disappeared) deserve special attention.

In honor of 300 anniversary of reign of the House of Romanovs province authorities ordered to build a special building for regional museum in Simferopol. In À.C. Steven’s dreams this multiple museum would unite archive and library, archeological, art, natural and historical collections.

The idea of such museum was realized in 1921, when was organized Central Museum of Tavrida (CMT), united two museums, at the same time State Archive was organized .

In 1923 first exposition of CMT was opened, it presented archeology, ethnography, art from the fund of this "museum rich in treasures - the only one in Crimea", as was written in newspapers. CMT had the following sectors: natural sciences - historic, archeological, art, ethnographic. Library «Tavrica» belonging earlier to TSAC was given to the museum. A bit later sector of revolution was opened. Structure of the museum in September 1926 was composed from two sectors: cultural-historic and natural-historic. In 10 years art gallery of the CMT was given to the Department of Arts under the Soviet of Public Commissars of the Crimean AAR, what stimulated foundation of modern Simferopol Art Gallery. Site of ancient settlement - Naples Scyths, Grotte Chokurcha and even Genoa Sudak fortress were in structure of CMT during different years.
.
During the World War II the museum and its collection, including library “Tavrica” were damaged seriously, were removed to Germany or plundered, but due to heroic efforts of employees of the museum sectors of nature and pre revolutionary history were opened in 9 days after liberation of Simferopol (21 April 1944), historical-revolution sector and exposition devoted to the World War II was opened on the 1 –st of May 1945. At the same year CMT was renamed into Crimean Museum of local lore (CMLL) and attracted thousands of tourists every year. Wide exposition and constantly enlarged funds needed special services, that is why Crimean Regional Executive Committee (order ¹ 940 from September 1948) ordered to open sculpture-art shop and restoration shop that had to work not only for the museum but for other cultural institutions as well. Very soon these shops were closed, though later there were attempts of organization of the restoration shop and taxidermist laboratory for CMLL needs but they did not exist for a long time. That is why the problem of reopening of these sectors is quite vivid till now.

In 1967 there were three main expositions in CMLL : nature, history of pre-revolutionary past and history of the soviet society; there were also sectors: mass excursions, scientific-methodical; sectors of keeping and guarding of historical and cultural monuments (developed in 1994 into the State Committee on Guarding and using of historical and cultural monuments (now – Republican Committee) with archeological sector); in 1971 Alushta Regional Museum became its filial. At the same time site of ancient settlement of scythes - Naples Scyths was under the jurisdiction of the Regional Museum.

In 1988 Museum was given a new building at #14, Gogol St., where it is situated till now; its old residence at #18, Pushkin St. was occupied by its ethnographic filial – Crimean Ethnographic Museum (CEM). Scientific Council of the museum was founded in 1922 which worked till 1998 and a position of Scientific Secretary of Museum was introduced, it was employed by Honored Worker of Culture of ARC - V.K. Karagulia.

In 1993 a new modern status was given to the Museum – Republican and it is named now - Crimean Republican Museum of Regional Studies (CRMRS). New list of members of staff and new structure of the Museum were approved and went into effect on June 1997 and continue in effect till now.

CRMRS today contains more than 130 thousand of exhibits, among which are: considerable collection from Paleolithic epoch till Middle ages, numismatics collection, collection of unique graphic drawings of the XVIII-th – XIX-th centuries with Crimean views, private archives of nature and history investigators of Crimean peninsular (such as V.I. Vernadsky, A.E. Fersman, E.V. Vulf, S.A. Zernov, L.I. Simirenko, S.A. Mokrzhetsky, A.Ch. Steven, A.L. Bertie-Delagardt, A.I. Markovich, F.F. Lashkov, N.N. Klepinin, A.I. Kashpar and many others connected their lives with one of the oldest Crimean museums), rich photo- and documentary funds.

Museum preserves interesting historical household things, items of decorative – applied art (Russian and foreign), collection of porcelain, ethnographic materials. Archeological collection of the museum took part many times in prestige international exhibitions in Italy, France, Germany.

Modern exposition is now under construction. Several constant exhibitions are opened for visitors : «Nature of Crimea», «Crimea during World War II», «Reliquiae of the Museum of Natural Science», «Life and creative path of poet I.L. Selvinsky», «Reanimation of soul», devoted to modern Christian art; canvas of famous artist, icons painter and restoration – George Eduardovich Bostrem (1884 - 1977 ) form the basis of the last mentioned exhibition, he headed for some time restoration shops of Troutse-Sergiev’s Lavra under direction of Apostolic patriarchy Tihon and ended his life on the Crimean land.

The Museum cooperates actively not only with cultural institutions but also with other organizations, including scientific. Its activity has scientific – enlightener character and is oriented on education of young people and propaganda of the richest material and spiritual heritage of Crimean peninsular. CRMRS organizes and takes part in different scientific and science-practical conferences not only on the territory of Crimea, from 2000 the Museum organizes Tavrichesky scientific readings, which materials are published and are very popular. “Proceedings of Crimean Republican Museum of Regional Studies” are published since 1993 (15 issues were published) and collected book “Crimea in illustrations”. Museum employees prepare publication in an almanac «Crimean Penates», magazine « Crimean Context », collected stories «Through the centuries», «New City », magazine « Peninsular of Nature » and other issues.

Now the Museum fits into II category and has quite branchy structure.
