Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Israel is located at a biogeographical crossroads, a meeting point for fauna and flora that originate from three different continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. The fauna and flora of Israel are therefore extremely diverse, and this diversity is further enhanced by the many climatological zones found in this small country. Israel is situated between two seas, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and in the most important bird migration route in the eastern hemisphere, and this increases the country's biodiversity.
Over the past century, Israel's environment has been severely affected by a tremendous surge of urbanization and development aimed at absorbing a tenfold increase in the population and developing a successful agriculture. Unfortunately, these processes have led to sharp habitat decreases, severe habitat fragmentation, rechannelling and contamination of Israel's meager water supply, and widespread use of dangerous pesticides. All these factors have affected Israel's environment and their impact can only be properly assessed by studying natural history collections. Such research is crucial for forming viable plans and future projections for nature conservation and management.
Israel, a state of nearly six million citizens, has no National Museum of Natural History. In fact, no museum of natural history exists in the entire Middle East. Here we propose to establish a National Museum of Natural History at the Ramat Aviv Campus of Tel Aviv University.
Tel Aviv university has extensive natural history collections that were founded over 60 years ago. Israel is the only scientific center in the entire Middle East where intensive collecting, research, and teaching in the natural sciences take place, so these collections are priceless and irreplaceable; they have local, regional, and even global significance. Over a decade ago, The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities has recognized the utmost importance of the natural history collections of Tel Aviv University and has declared them, together with collections housed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as the Israel National Collections of Natural History. These collections were viewed as a a National Museum of Natural History in the making, and, recognizing their significance, the Planning and Grants Committee of the Council for Higher Education (Vatat) provides annual funds towards costs of maintenance.
The National Museum of Natural History at Tel Aviv University will strive to fulfill the following goals:
- We will endevour to maintain and strengthen our active collecting program. The collections provide the scientific record of nature in Israel, which is crucial for biodiversity research, and to the future of nature in our region.
- The museum will be responsible for conservation and maintenance of the collections, for taxonomic identification, and for providing the international scientific community with a computerized database (virtual museum) available on internet.
- The museum will continue to promote biodiversity research. Museum researchers will work to assess environmental damage and to document threatened species. The museum will serve as a regional center for biodiversity research in the Middle East.
- The museum will help to promote biological studies at different educational levels. It will continue to serve a wide array of university level courses, teaching seminars, and graduate students. The museum will be committed to teaching through public lectures, developing educational programs for children and for the general public.
- The museum will have a major educational and cultural role. It will bring insight into natural history to the public, in particular schoolchildren, and help promote an interchange between scientists at Tel Aviv University and the community. Moreover, Israel is a land of immigration; over 10% of its population have been here a decade or less. A museum of natural history will serve to familiarize this population with its new surroundings, as well as instill a caring and respect in the younger generation for the natural history of its country.
The Department of Zoology was established in 1932 initially as the Biological-Pedagogical Institute, and was one of the first of the many departments that now form Tel-Aviv University. Over the years, the Department has become the largest academic center for zoological research in Israel and its members have played key roles in establishing the various nature conservation institutions and organizations in the country.
Today, the Department of Zoology comprises 25 faculty members, 16 retired professors, 7 new immigrant scientists in various absorption schemes, post-doctoral fellows and over 80 graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.). The research in the department integrates studies of animal biology and ecology. It covers a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, mostly related to the whole organism, including ecology, evolution, behavior, biodiversity, phylogeny, physiology, conservation biology and mathematical biology. The research engages with terrestrial, avian, marine (Mediterranean and Red Sea) and freshwater systems in a large variety of taxonomic groups. It utilizes diverse state-of-the-art investigative and experimental techniques, both in the field and in the laboratory.
The Department of Zoology offers a wide variety of both compulsory and specialized elective undergraduate courses as well as graduate level courses. Members of the Department teach courses in the fields of vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, animal behavior, ecology, fauna of Israel, evolutionary biology, physiology, marine biology, entomology, biological conservation and mathematical biology.
The Department also encompasses two unique research infrastructure facilities. The first is the
I. Meier Segals Garden for Zoological Research, the only one of its type in the country, offering unique research and teaching facilities focusing on the fauna of Israel. The second is the Zoological Collections, which represent the most comprehensive record of the biodiversity of our region and constitute the largest section of the National Collections of Natural History at Tel-Aviv University. Members of the Department are involved in educational activities designed for schoolchildren and the general public organized through the Nature Campus program, whose activities make available to the public the treasures of the I. Meier Segals Garden for Zoological Research and the National History Collections. Two other projects also affiliated with the Department are the Animals and Society Unit which researches and consults on many aspects of the mutual interaction between humans and animals, and The International Center for the Study of Bird Migration, Latrun, which is involved in both basic and practical aspects of bird migration. The Department houses the national center for High Throughput Screening (HTS) of novel bioactive compounds from natural sources.
