"The castle can date its history back to the 17th century and to the days of General Axel Lillie. Today it is a museum. Emelie Piper, the last mistress of the castle, died in 1926 and since then time at Löfstad slott has stood still. The castle has been preserved in the minutest detail just as it was when the last lady of the castle lived there. The furniture, household equipment, art and the private belongings of the noble family - everything is at it was. Löftstad slott - a trip back in time through the centuries.

Since 1926 time has stood still at Löfstad Palace. The palace now rests in its park, undisturbed by the passage of the years. When you visit Löfstad you are taken on a journey back through the centuries, a journey you cannot go on anywhere else.
Löfstad is an intact noble home with origins in the 15th century. For 200 years it belonged to the Lillie family, then through inheritance it went to the De la Gardie and von Fersen families, and finally it was the property of the Piper family from the 18th century until the last owner’s death in 1926.

The palace offers a unique opportunity to see how the nobility lived in the early part of the century – and also, incidentally, to see something of how servants lived too. Here you will find what took generation upon generation to collect – from the splendid furniture of the drawing-rooms to small personal effects and mementoes.
The majority of the works of art at Löfstad are portraits of family and friends. They extend from the 17th to the 19th century. Some are by unknown artists, others by such well-known artists as Ehrenstrahl and Pasch. One of the portraits is of Axel von Fersen the younger.
There are also tapestries from the 17th century.
The English park became fashionable in Sweden towards the end of the 18th century. It was part of a reaction against the flamboyance and floridity of the baroque and the rococo. Now, in the English park, nature was to be herself. However, it was often necessary to give her a helping hand: where the original vegetation was insufficient to create the right balance between light and shade, there was planting; and where the vegetation was too dense there was cutting back.


The style was romantic, with arched bridges, grottoes and temples. There was a great interest in new species, which were sometimes imported from countries far away. Tradition has it that the two hemlock spruces and the larch were brought from North America in 1783 by Axel von Fersen the
younger, who had taken part in the American War of Independence.


In the vicinity there is a path where you can stroll and see the sites of Iron-Age dwellings side by side with the crofts that have belonged to the palace. Here in this exquisite landscape you can get an idea of how people in different strata of society used to live.

Finspang ironworks museum

„The water-powered ironworks at Finspong, 30 km west of Norrkoping was established in the late 16th century by the Walloon Wellam de Wijk. It came to specialise in the production of cast-iron cannon, and was energetically developed by two other Walloons, a father (d 1652) and son (1622-95) both called Louis de Geer, who took over the works from the crown in 1641. During the rest of the 17th century and throughout the 18th century the works had a monopoly on the production of cannon in Sweden, and continued to make guns until the last was test-fired in 1912. The de Geers brought to Finspong many skilled ironworkers from the regions around Liege and Namur, and in 1668 the son built the imposing chateau in the Dutch style that remains a feature of the landscape. In the 19th century the ironworks specialised in the production of art castings under the direction of a German founder, C F J W Mertens (d 1882).

A museum, open in the summer months, in a small 18th century building displays products of the works including cannon and relief castings including that modelled on Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, which was produced by 19th century foundries in several European countries.

Finspong remains an important centre for the engineering industries, and de Geer’s castle is now occupied by the Siemens corporation. The castle, the rushing water, the ironworkers’ houses in the Brukgatan which bear their dates of construction in wrought-iron letters, and the park, with its iron temple and bridges of the 1850s, comprise one of Sweden’s best-preserved industrial landscapes.“ (ERIH)
 

Häfla Hammerforge

Häfla Hammerforge is situated about 200 km south of Stockholm and 50 km northwest of Norrköping

Häfla Hammerforge, situated on Häfla Stream was founded in 1682. The works then included one hammer and two fires.
The factory was granted its privileges in 1683 with the authorisation to produce 45 tons malleable iron yearly. The privileges were granted on the grounds that charcoal produced from own forests was used and that the requirements for pigiron were covered by the factory owner's tenants.
The beginning of the 18th century large reconstruction’s of the forge as well as of the waterpower plants were made in order to increase the production.
In 1742 the privileges for production were increased to 90 tons malleable iron. Nora and Linde mining districts were to supply the pig iron.
When the forge was built the iron was refined according to the "German forging method". At the beginning of the 19th century a long period of experiments for new methods started and in 1882 Lancashire furnace were installed for producing blooms until the forge shut down in 1924.
In 1827 "Skjerforsa mill and sawmill" situated 5 km downstream from Häfla Övre Bruk was purchased. A factory for manufactured iron was erected. This was used for manufacturing nails, fine bar iron, horseshoes, fools and the like.
In 1846 the Häfla works received unrestricted manufacturing rights.
During the years 1861 - 1900 the works ran a rolling-mill at the Middle works, where Häfla mill now is situated.
In 1924 all activities al Häfla Övre Bruk were shut down. The hammer forge was opened for one day in 1934 when declared a historical industrial monument by the Swedish Technical Museum. In 1990 Häfla Hammer forge was declared a national memorial.
Today you find a well preserved German forge heath furnace, the only one in the country, and a Lancashire hearth as well as a tilt hammer from 1829 made entirely by wood and a front hammer from the 1 1830's. The hammer has a wooden shaft and an iron head weighing 700 kilos manufactured in Finspång. You will also find a "Bagges blast engine" in the building.
