Lagedijk 80
NL-1544 BJ Zaandijk
(Zuid-Holland)

Google Maps

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The collection of historical objects built up by Zaan historian Jacob Honig Janszoon Jr. (1816- 1870) was donated to the Zaandijk Council in 1890 and is now exhibited in a distinguished merchant house on the Lagedijk. The exhibits relate to the history of the region around the River Zaan. Paintings and artefacts tell about domestic interiors, trade and industry, religion, clothing and the everyday life.
The china cabinet, whose walls are hung with canvases of village and country scenes painted by W. Uppink in 1830, holds an excellent collection of Chinese porcelain.

The goal of the Society is to protect and restore the defense works, and make them a museum. As a first step, a FL246 ammunition bunker has been restaured and opened to the public.
There are over 200 photographs to be seen (some of which never earlier presented) and several artefacts. The exhibition begins with a series of pictures documenting the Atlantikwall from Norway up to the French/Spanish Border. Then there is a room for Battery Noordwijk and a special TV room. The organisation DARE (Dutch Aviation Research and Excavation) is present with their exhibition, part of which is a Messerschmitt which was shot down in 1943 near Noorden and excavated in 2003.

The museum also exhibits an important collection of 19th and 20th century paintings mainly aimed at Katwijk during the period 1880-1920. In those years Katwijk as a artist colony attracted many artists from all over the world. Temporary exhibitions with works of contemporary artists are held on a regular basis.

The museum is housed in an imposing mansion built about 1790 in the heart of old Rijswijk. During the middle of the previous century the poet Hendrik Tollens (1780-1856) lived in the house. Besides his literary work, represented by numerous publications, there are various personal possessions of the poet on view.
The collection of objects relating to the Treaty of Rijswijki (1697) includes engravings, medals and treaty documents.
Two views of the palace of the stadholder Frederik Hendrik by Anthonie Jansz van der Croos (c.1606-c.1664) and the only known 17th century view of Rijswijk by Jacob van der Croos (c.1630-p.1683) are also on display. However more views of Rijswijk and its environs from the 18th and 19th centuries have survived and works by Jan te Compe (1713-1761), Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880) and Charles Rochussen (1814-1894), among others, give a picture of the village of Rijswijk with the surrounding country estates. The museum collection also includes various interiors and still lifes by Rijswijk artists, such as Willem Carel Nakken (1835-1926), Abraham Calissendorff (1854-1898) and Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen (1863-1931).
Works by artists who were members of the Verenigde Rijswijkse Kunstenaars (United Rijswijk Artists), such as Carel Nakken (1835-1926), Frits Mondriaan 1853-1932), Pieter de Regt (1877-1960), Otto Kriens (1873-1930) and Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen (1863-1931), are also exhibited. Contemporary artists are represented by Hermanus Berserik, Kees Andreaand Karel Delfos. The museum also possesses some paper works of art by Peter Gentenaar and Patricia Gentenaar-Torley.
About 10 temporary exhibitions are organized annually. Highlights in the exhibition programming are the biannual exhibitions devoted to the painters of the Haagse School (the Hague School) or its contemporaries and the Holland Papier Biënnale (Holland Paper Biennial).

The collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden began with an inheritance of 150 Greek and Roman statues, left to the University of Leiden in 1744. Today (2007) the archaeological collection consists of more than 80,000 objects, of which you can admire almost 6,000 in permanent presentations. They originate from four different regions: the Netherlands, Egypt, the Near East and the world of classical antiquity. Among these are the statues of the Roman emperors and prehistoric golden jewellery, as well as Egyptian mummy cases and Etruscan masterpieces in bronze.
