„The town council in Halmstad decided in 1933 to give the town's workers committe a work camp in Tylösand. Young men were employed to drain the land and lay out a garden.
The marshy, and overgrown by a birch tree forest, valley was chosen for the park. Camps were erected at the sight and 30 young men of the age 16-25 started working. They were very ambitious and after three months Tylösand had another attraction - the Rhododendronpark. The park is frequently guested by the nighting gale, the willow-wren and sometimes the rare chiffchaff, which one can hear in the spring. Here are also planted yew-trees and wild growing honeysuckle and blackthorn." (www.halland.se) |

The Museum of Halmstad is beautifully situated by the river Nissan in the centre of the city of Halmstad on the Swedish west coast.
Recently the museum has been rebuilt from the roof down to the basement. Our permanent art exhibition is called Selected Works - Art from our Collection The permanent exhibition on the cultural history of Halland is called Selected Memories - the Keys to Halland's history. We also house temporary exhibitions of art and history. The museum also consists of the open air museum Hallandsgården - a small Skansen situated on beautiful Galgberget. Brooktorpsgården is another part of the museum. The Museum of Halmstad have a rich collection of art and historic objects. We have a large collection of pictures from the 19th and 20th century, we have interesting things connected to archæology, ships and sailing, painted furniture and old swedish tapestry. Some of these things are exhibited on the first and second floor in our art galleries. You will se more later on when the new historic exhibition opens. But many things will stay in our storehouses, preserved for future generations of scientists and for the visitors of the museum of tomorrow. |

„The ship Najaden is one of Halmstad's most important characteristics and most photographed object. The ship tells the history of ship's boys from the time of Karl XI, the latter half of the 17th centure, up to 1939. The boats Najaden and Jarramas were built in Karlskrona in 1897 and 1900 to educate ship's boys in seamanship during 3 summer months. During the remaining 9 months, the boys where given ordinary schooling in Karlskrona. The boys were 14 years when they were registered for the ship's boys training and after that they attended 6 years of skipper schooling.
Najaden shows the environment the boys lived in, 100 ship's boys were trained here by some 20 commanders. The ship is decorated nearly the way it was during the ship's most active years 1897-1938. There are guided tours. During the summer the sea scouts serve coffee and cakes onboard and sometimes there is also music entertainment. Co-operation with Sjömanskyrkan. The ship is unforturnately not handicap fiendly. Smoking is not permitted onboard." (www.halland.se) |
