At Jamtli, the whole family can meet the cultural history of Jämtland in an entertaining way. Permanent exhibitions about the region’s past are displayed side by side with temporary exhibitions that reflect the world of today. The open air museum boasts a wonderful park and exciting historical milieus.
A range of events especially for children take place all year round, and there are interesting activities for schools, tourists, associations and companies. Jamtli has got something for everybody! The Överhogdal Tapestries These textiles are the crown jewels of Jamtli’s collections. They are a fascinating series of woven tapestries from the Viking Age. Each of the weaves is covered by figures of people, horses and wild animals, as well as legendary creatures. They hurry from right to left in rows, passing houses, churches and ships on their way. The motives and symbols have been interpreted in many different ways over the years. Some people believe that the tapestries show the story of the missionary Staffan bringing Christianity to Härjedalen. Others see scenes from the Völsunga saga. The latest theory is that the images are about the end of the world – known as Ragnarök in Norse mythology, the Apocalypse in Christianity. It is undoubted that the tapestries show motives connected with both old Norse and Christian beliefs. They were woven in a period of transition between the two faiths, a fact that makes them even more exciting to our imagination. They were found in a shed by the church in Överhogdal in Härjedalen in 1910. First believed to date from the middle ages, C14 test conducted in 1991 proved the different parts of the tapestries to date from between 800 and 1100 AD. This means that they were made during the Viking era. Today, these unique items are exhibited at Jamtli, were a special room has been designed to make sure that they are preserved in optimal conditions. |

An impressive building
A huge house, nestling against the high Fundsdalsberget mountain. The building in itself is worth a visit! A new and fascinating museum As far back as 1894, the far-sighted merchant Erik Fundin founded Sweden's first local museum. Thanks to the early beginning of collecting, the museum today houses an outstanding exhibition, both in quality and in quantity, showing the lives of the Sami people, the farmers and the miners during the past 1000 years. The way in which the exhibits are presented makes the encounter of the Härjedalen inhabitants' culture an unforgettable and exciting experience. Fornminnesparken This outdoor museum, situated next to the new museum, displays a variety of old traditional log buildings from the region, with exhibitions and activities. Emil Näsvall, Sculptures The works of Härjedalens most famous sculptor are displayed at a special exhibition. Lekstugan - a mountain pasture for children Creep through the 'secret tunnel' to the mountain pasture, discover and experience all the fascinating things that it can offer. Café Enjoy the charming local furnishings. The assembly room with 126 seats and a modern sound and lighting system. Tourist Information The local tourist office is situated in the entrance hall of the museum. |
