A unique collection of sculptures from the Dutch sculptor Adriaen de Vries (1556-1626) can be seen at the old Dragoon Stables from the 1700s close to the Drottingholm Wärdshus.
Bronze sculptures dating back to the beginning of the 1600s were brought to Sweden as booty and were eventually placed in the Drottningholm Palace park.

Today these sculptures have been replaced by modern bronze casts and the originals can be seen at the Museum De Vries. The museum contains the world´s largest collection of Adriaen De Vries' work.

The history of Vaxholm Fortress begins early in the 16th century, with the construction of a blockhouse on Vaxholm by Svante Nilsson Sture, the Regent. Gustav Vasa instructed the governor of Stockholm to replace the blockhouse with a stone tower and to fill the narrow passage of Oxdjupet with rocks. That work was ready in 1839.

A Danish attack was repelled in 1612, and in 1719 the Russians were prevented from reaching Stockholm. In the 1870s, the defensive emphasis shifted from Vaxholm Fortress to the straight Oxdjupet. In 1876, Oxdjupet was opened to traffic and a new fort - Oscar-Fredriksborg - was built.

Since the turn of the century, the forces defending the archipelago have moved their positions outwards, ultimately reaching the outermost perimeter of the islands.

Vaxholm Fortress Museum
Opened 1947 at Oscar-Fredriksborg fort, and moved to Vaxholm Citadel, where it reopened in 1964. In 2003 the museum has been totally restored. The museum’s indoor department occupies thirty-five beautiful rooms and halls on both floors of the west section. Visitors see the fortress as it was in 1854, and can enter one of the Citadel’s bombproof vaults and see how things were during the Crimean War. In other settings you can call in on the Commandant, follow the issuing of orders ain a mine battery or visit the World War II coastal defence artillery post.

A visit to the Citadel should also include a visit to the café.

"Sigtuna, a town founded on the shore of Lake Mälaren 1,000 years ago, was once Swedens most important city housing the royal courts, political contacts and center of the newly introduced Christianism.

At this time, Sweden was entering a new era as the Viking period became medieval. The city continued to operate as a royal and comercial centre for some 250 years, and is still today full of memories from this important era in Swedens history.

Today Sigtuna is an idyll well worth a visit, especially the market on sundays, with picturesque wooden houses, spacious gardens and a well-known town hall." (Museums in Stockholm)

Rosersberg Palace is one of the best kept secrets of Sweden's royal palaces. At Rosersberg time stands still.

The Oxenstierna family built the palace in the 1630s. It became a royal palace in 1762, when the state gave Rosersberg to Gustav III's younger brother Karl XIII.
King Karl XIV Johan and Queen Desideria spent long, relaxing summers at Rosersberg.

The rooms remain almost untouched from the 1795-1825 period, with well-preserved interiors and collections. Rosersberg become the missing link between the Gustavian era and the first of the Bernadottes.

The endless park in the breathtaking landscape of Mälaren adds to the charm of Rosersberg.

The French baroque garden lies closest to Rosersberg Palace towards Lake Mälaren.
The garden, commissioned by Count Bengt Oxenstierna, was considered one of Sweden's most lavish, at the time it was planted at the end of the 1600s by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger.

Swans and gondolas
Today, much of the garden has overgrown or disappeared. However, it is still possible to wander through the 300 year old avenues and admire the 600 metre long pond, where once both swans and gondolas were found.
To the left of the palace towards the Sigtuna bay lies the English garden commissioned by Duke Karl (XIII) around the turn of the 19th century.

Here you can stroll down winding paths and find superb views of both land and water.

The mystical King Nordian
In the vicinity you can also visit one of Sweden´s largest burial-mounds belonging to the mystical King Nordian from the Era of the Great Migration.
The Romanesque churches from 1160- 1170 in neighbouring villages of Norrsunda and Skånela are also worthwhile visiting. They both share an unusual feature with towers to the east.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Strömholm's yellow baroque palace is built on a paved islet where the fast-flowing Kolbäck river meets Lake Mälaren.
Queen Dowager, Hedvid Eleonora, headed many large construction projects at Strömsholm. She built the new palace and around twenty other buildings in the palace grounds.

The palace was completed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, however work with the interiors came to a halt. Members of the Royal Family liked to overnight here on their way southbound.

The palace with its extensive green surroundings is a cherished day-trip destination. Couples getting married often choose the romantic palace chapel for their ceremonies.

Noteworthy things to see include the impressive interiors from the 1700s and an important collection of Swedish paintings.

Today, Strömsholm is a hippological centre, where equestrian competitions are held each year.

The castle is open to the public during the summer months. Group visits are possible all year round via advance booking.
