The museum gives a review of the events of the history of Haarlem and its surroundings. In a audio visual presentation, Laurens Jansz-Coster recounts the Story of Haarlem. The Haarlem ''inventor of the art of printing'' pauses at the Siege of Haarlem in 1572, the serious fire of Haarlem a few years later, the coming of Flemish folk such as Frans Hals, the construction of the Vleeshal, the almshouses, the drainage of the Haarlemmermeer, the first train journey from Amsterdam to Haarlem in 1839 and the Haarlem flower girls.
Regularly changing exhibitions also highlight specific themes from the history of the city and the region.

After its foundation, Spaarnestad Photo has been working as an independent institution at the preservation of the photographic archives of the former Haarlem based De Spaarnestad publishing company. From its beginning the task of SPH has been the preservation and disclosure of the abundance of the photographic contents of the archives - a century of Dutch and international documentary photography laid down in ca. 5 million photos (2005) - by turning the former company archives into an archive for the public. This is done, among other things, by making the photos available for (photo)historic research and educational purposes, by organizing exhibitions in SPH's own exhibition rooms in Haarlem or those of others and by stimulating photographic publications. The size and quality of SPH's collections make the archives one of the main photographic memories in the Netherlands. Together with Frans Hals Museum, Historisch Centrum Zuid-Kennemerland and Architectuur Bouwhistorisch Centrum (ABC), Spaarnestad Photo forms the cultural heart of Haarlem.

Internationally famous as a museum of the Dutch Golden Age, the Museum is situated in a picturesque 17th-century building, where hundreds of paintings and craft objects are on alternating display. The museum rooms offer an overview of Dutch painting at its peak in the 16th and especially the 17th century. The 16th-century collection features works by Hendrick Goltzius, Cornelis van Haarlem and Maerten van Heemskerck. Among the many masters representing the Golden Age are Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan Steen, Johannes Verspronck and Pieter Saenredam.
In the early 1960s the museum gained the Vleeshal (old meat hall) in Haarlem’s main marketplace as an annexe. In 1995 the Verweyhal was opened, which is adjacent to the Vleeshal. Together they form De Hallen, which house the museum’s large collection of modern art and provide space for exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.

The museum owns a large collection of Dutch modern and contemporary art. Since 2001 the museum has concentrated on collecting contemporary photography, with an emphasis on photos with a social commitment.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Dolhuys has occupied a function within the mental health system for the last 700 years. It was founded in 1320 as a leper-, plague- and mad-house. The long history of the building and the labyrinth of small rooms and passageways led to the idea of making the building the foundation for the exhibition in which ''the walls are able to speak''.
Experience the world of madness in the Dolhuys. Meet madmen and lunatics, or clients as they are known today, in our interactive museum and find out how the Netherlands has dealt with madness throughout the centuries.
We would like to encourage our visitors to think about the boundary between crazy and normal and question the representations of 'madness'.
In 2005 the Museum received the Dutch design award.

The former steam pumping station ''De Cruquius'', from 1849, is an industrial monument of world proportions and part of the World Heritage. The station drained the Haarlemmermeer unti it was put out of service in 1933.
The Museum ''De Cruquius'' is one of the anchor points in the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). The exhibition shows the steam pumping station in its archetypical Dutch context of a never ceasing struggle against the water. The former steam pumping station was built in neo-Gothic style. The building is richly ornamented and looks like a medieval castle. The museum's exhibition is equipped with audiovisuals and shows maps dating from 1550 tot 1852, various models of windmills, water raising devices, polders and sluices, showing how people for centuries tried to live below the sea level, keeping their feet dry. There are working steam engine models that show the development from ''fire engine'' till the steam engine. You might also assist to a demonstration of the oldest preserved steam engine in the Netherlands: the former steam pumping station ''De Arkelse Dam'' from 1826.
