The museum is located in the stone building called “Mince” (Coin) in the lower part of the town square. Until 1420 it was the headquarters of mining authorities from where mining operations at Jilové area were administered and where the tax in gold form was collected.
After Hussite wars when golden age of gold mining ended in this district, mining authorities at Jilové lost their importance and the house became a private property. In 1590 Edward Kelly, the court alchemist of the Emperor Rudolf II, owned it for a short time. A fresco on the wall of the building turned to the courtyard dates back to 1744 and it reminds one of subsequent owners, Ferdinand von Krauseneck, one-time the administrator of “Zemské desky” laws.
Since1876 “Mince” had been in possession of the town and a basic school had been located there until 1958. After 1958 the Museum has solely used it.
The idea to establish a museum came from Jílové citizen Leopold Èihák who offered his own collection to the town. It included hundreds of documents, maps and objects. His offer was accepted and on December 28th, 1891, the town Museum was established. Museum collections and during following years expanded to more than 67 000 objects connected to the history of gold mining. Craftsmen’s tools, objects of daily use, textiles, fashionable objects, toys, pictures, books, archeological findings, photographs and records give an account of the way of life of Jílové area.
The Jílové u Prahy Regional Museum concentrates on local life in the district Prague-West (Lower Posázaví and Middle Povltaví) and it is also a specialized museum for gold mining in the Czech Republic. Together with the Geofond of the Czech Republic, it constitutes a centre for the documentation of gold deposits in Bohemia. All this is reflected in permanent exhibitions called: “Gold in the Czech Republic”; “From the history of the district”; and “Tramping and hiking in the southern surroundings of Prague” (now closed due to reconstruction).
