The Old Town Hall belongs to the most important sights of Prague historical centre. The town hall office had been situated in the corner burgher´s house with a tower since the first half of the 14th century. The Old Town Hall is currently comprised of a building complex of several burghers´ houses which were purchased and rebuilt over the centuries.
Among the remarkable art historical components of the south side of the complex belong: the astronomical clock, which was mentioned as early as 1410; the main Late Gothic portal from the third quarter of the 15th century; and the distinct Renaissance window from the 16th century with the grille added subsequently. There were many small Gothic portals, vaults, wall paintings from the 15th century and painted log ceiling from the 16th century, restored in the interior. The eastern part of the complex was destroyed at the end of the Second World War in May 1945.
Today the building complex of the Old Town Hall serves as the cultural and representative space of the city of Prague. The Gallery can use the rooms on the second floor in which it presents the latest tendencies of contemporary art to the public.

The exhibition The City of K. Franz Kafka and Prague, on view in the unique space of Hergetova Cihelna, on the Malá Strana bank of the river Vltava, has toured the world successfully. It originated in 1999 in Barcelona - a city favourable to art, in which the sternness of the grey Romanesque churches of the early Middle Ages complements the manifold colours of Joan Miro's statues. The Catalonian Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona presented it as the third exhibition (together with Dublin of James Joyce and Lisbon of Fernando Pessoa) in a series of monumental expositions devoted to these towns brought to fame by these world-renowned writers. Their organizer is Juan Insua with a group of collaborators. The success of the exhibition in Barcelona led to its being displayed again in 2002 in the Jewish Museum in New York, where it was received with extraordinary enthusiasm. Subsequently, appeals were sent to Prague from New York so that the city where Kafka was born could also participate in the organizing of the exhibition.
The idea to stage the exhibition in Prague came about while the slow was taking place in Barcelona; however, it could not be accomplished due to the lack of financial resources. Finally, the concept came to existence when a company determined to carry out the challenge was found. This could only happen due to the interplay of many factors. For instance, never before had it been possible to create an exhibition emphasising the influence of Czech context on Kafka's life and work, to incorporate Czech locations into the project and to present the reception of Kafka's work by the Czech people. The Czech contribution, in spite of the unfavourable political situation of the past regime and the language barrier, was especially an area that had not been sufficiently recognized and explored abroad.
The exhibition The City of K. Franz Kafka and Prague differs from the majority of the numerous exhibitions focused on the theme of Kafka, which mostly aim at presenting relevant documents. By contrast, this exhibition has documents as its starting point and uses them to call up a metaphoric reflection of Kafka's life and work. The exhibition consists of two parts. The first one, called Existencial space, categorizes Kafka's life events as well as the influence the environment in which he lived had on him. The second one, called Imaginary topography, shows the way in which Kafka's work reflects the intricate process of transformation of the physical reality of Prague and Kafka's life into a metaphoric image. The exhibition revives the photographs of people and places as well as manuscripts and books in the ingeniously planned installations which employ the most modern audio-visual technologies. Here, a word, an image, light and music combine in a symphonic unity. The concept of the exhibition is described in a representative catalogue in three languages (Czech, German and English). Moreover, the second part contains eight essays by distinguished Kafka scholars.

The Municipal Library on the square Mariánské was built in 1925-1928 according to the plans of architect František Roith, a student of professor Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy. The building was conceived as a cultural institution with extensive possibilities of use including exhibition, lecture and concert halls.
In the building's eastern wing there is the official flat of the Prague Mayor, furnished in Art Deco style. The building architecture works from a rationalistically contained layout plan and from simple volume planning. Above the main entrance and balcony balustrade there are allegorical statues from Ladislav Kofránek.
The building facade is covered with travertine, which is used along with brass and artificial stone in interior decoration as well. The author of the ornamental geometric decoration in the central hall ceiling is František Kysela.
The Gallery acquired the extensive exhibition space on the 2nd floor in 1992. After their restoration, the GHMP has been organizing representative exhibitions here. As a part of the adaptation there was also implementation of new artistic entrance into the Gallery from the street Valentinská. Architect Vlado Miluniè designed the entrance in 1996.

The newly opened venue covers an area of 80 square metres and meets all the requirements of a modern gallery. It is located on the ground floor in the north-east section of the new Jewish Museum complex. The use of high-quality adjustable window shades and a double-door entrance makes it possible to fully control the temperature and humidity of the room, thus creating ideal conditions for the display of even the most sensitive of materials (parchments, old printed books, historic textiles). The use of quality low-energy lighting and the possibility of regulating the intensity and angle of light make it possible to display historic materials that are extremely sensitive to light. The continuous projecting course at the top of the wall is fitted with safety sensors, thus making for a safe and aesthetic display of pictures.
The opening of a new gallery for temporary exhibitions has been a long-awaited event. In view of the fact that the Museum’s art collection has boasted the most significant acquisitions in the past decade, the new gallery will be a venue primarily for the display of artwork from this collection, which has previously been shown only to a very limited extent. The exhibitions will focus mainly on Czech Jewish artists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although it is also our intention to feature post-war and contemporary modern art.
The gallery is named after the well-known Prague naive painter Robert Guttmann, whose work is featured in the first exhibition. In this way it hopes to bring this artist to public attention and to promote young artists in their search for originality of artistic expression. There will also be exhibitions of historic works that highlight the contribution of Jewish artists to various areas of Czech culture. The gallery will hold four to five exhibitions each year. For the next few years we have already planned to showcase the work of a number of Czech Jewish artists, including Emil Orlik , Alfred Justitz, Jiøí Kars, Bedøich Feigl and a host of less well-known names.
